Posted - 01 July 2009 : 5:29:22 PM Publishers are a bit twitchy about using this name because of the Stephanie Meyer vampire series. So I need to come up with a few quick suggestions.
Ideally, I'd like something that thematically links with 'Last Light' to help flag up that it's a sequel. Something that hints at promise on the horizon after a long period of darkness perhaps?
Any suggestions gratefully recieved....and if I end up using one, a nod to you in the author's acknowledgments! |

Posted - 19 September 2009 : 10:04:02 AM Final say on cover/title usually go with the publisher. I think it might even be in the contract somewhere. But if you're a big-big-name author I think the publisher will allow a little wriggle room if an author is completely unhappy with a design.
That said, I forget the author, but recently there was a story of some American author, I think, who objected to the face of the protagonist on the cover, who was portrayed as white, when in fact her character was black. The publisher did a rather prompt about turn when she raised hell, most probably out of fear of an accusation of rascism, and she got the cover she wanted. I think though, that was very much an exception to the rule. Generally though, it's the marketing guys who get to make the call.
nb: I think it's only fair to say I've found both my publishers quite accommadating, ready to listen to my suggestions. Whilst I haven't ever gotten my favourite covers, I've managed to steer them away from a few I really detested.
and I do feel that |

Posted - 18 September 2009 : 09:33:27 AM Forgive me for being a thickie on this, i know some of the publishing side of things.
But when did the author lose control of the cover and the title?
did they ever have control of this?
or is it only when you have made your name and control a certain market share that you can demand control over title and cover?

Posted - 18 September 2009 : 07:45:35 AM I think that means it's official. If it were down to me - after much consideration I would go for:-
A Twilight World
But Orion were very concerned with the word 'Twilight' being anywhere in the title, for obvious reasons. |

Posted - 12 September 2009 : 2:49:20 PM Hmmm....After Light....Afterlight......
I think now the initial reaction has died down it ain`t so bad.....could even grow on people....maybe? I prefer it as one word, though two words link better to Last Light. Still think there`s something better out there though. I don`t see the need for the link myself, it`s gonna have sequel to Last Light printed all over anyway. The link is Alex from a buying point of view, and the title needs to say BUY ME.

Posted - 05 September 2009 : 5:53:30 PM I Still dont think it works Split Al, it just does not grab as a title, and what does it mean for the story?
Last Light, for mean meant after the the oil runs out the last light will go out...thats sort of thing...what does After Light mean?...Nothing except an attempt to have light in the title and TBH not a very god one IMHO. Id rather you skipped it and went for something fresh, you can always have something saying its a sequel to Last Light somewhere smaller on the cover.
I think you want something catchy...and its not After light or Afterlight.
(sorry)

Posted - 05 September 2009 : 4:32:28 PM I don't think either version works. Twilight was a good title and maybe Orion should be working around that as in 'Twilight World', or something, or go a bit literary as in 'Into That Dark Night'. |

I don't like it. Is it even a word? If so, it's not one I've ever heard anyone use before. It makes me think of 'afterglow', the kind you get after reading a saucy novel.
I've waited over a day to post this - I was hoping it would grow on me. But it hasn't.

Posted - 03 September 2009 : 7:29:22 PM I can't say that I care for it Alex. It doesn't convey anything about the book, or about its subject, or that it follows Last Light. Those who recognise your name on the cover will look inside the book anyway (I assume that the cover blurb will say something useful, they don't always) and some others will look at it to see what it's about. I don't think the new title will prompt a lot of impulse sales to bring you new fans. Cheers John

Posted - 02 September 2009 : 8:55:39 PM TimeRiders cover? Yuh....done deal there I'm afraid. It's designed for the core market (lads 11+). Maybe it'll get a rebrand with a more mature cover later on, once it's caught on. I'm hoping. |
