I raised the subject at my meeting, and my agent suggested it would probably be wise to wait until after the book had landed a publisher to submit it to a small cadre of trustworthy readers.
So, I'm really sorry guys. For now, I'll have to keep it under wraps. Which is a shame because I'm gagging to get some wider feedback in on it.
Anyway...keep watching this spot. I've got a much stronger gut feeling about EQ than I had about A Thousand Suns.

Tis fine you have to protect your intellectual property and all that!!
We are here when you need us!!
And it must be really eating you up, it bad enough when you get to review a book and cannot talk to everyone about the contents....even worse when you proof read as thats so far in advance...it eats you alive!!

| I'm working through some revisions with my agent right now. Tweaks really...so until we're done with that, we're holding it back. That said, I'm gagging to get it out there. |

| What's the latest with this book/series? I like the sound of it, a lot. I'm in too if there's some sort of test-reader programme being sorted out. |

| It's out with publishers right now. I'm hoping to hear back in the next few weeks. Fingers crossed, one or more of them will like it. Until there's a publisher attached, then I've been advised to keep the story under wraps. Sorry Kilbo, but hopefully soon I'll be able to run this past a few core betas. Watch this space. |

I've had a rejection. 1st comeback from the 9 publishers. I'm not overly worried, they're a publisher that posted some big losses last year and I believe are struggling a bit. So with hindsight not somebody I'd want snapping me up.
The wording of the rejection struck me as pretty standard. |

not the result you hoped for i'm sure, but then again least it shows it's being read. Lets just hope that one of the others picks it up. still a 1 in 8 chance of getting a publisher.
I'm sure everyone here will have every limb crossed (although will make walking rather difficult.hehe)

you should print off some of the forum posts to go with the book to the publishers and also some of the ebay pages for the proofs of a thousand suns... show them the kind of money your book is selling for pre publication...
demand is out there!!
Fingers crossed Alex, and if we can help just shout!!

| Still waiting. Responses negative or positive are pretty much due about now. It usually takes publishers about 3 months or more to review a ms. It took about 6 months before I heard back on SUNS. So...I'd guess in the next four weeks or so all 9 will have come back one way or the other. |

Any news on this? I'm getting a little impatient now :-)
Alex, have you thought about publishing chapters on the website if you can't find a normal publisher to buy it? I have read several big book deals happened because an editor saw a blog, or sample chapters on various author websites. |

| Being a nosey bugger, what's Orion's position on EQ? Is it that they want to publish you in only a 1000 Suns genre? Have you tried whoever publishs Tom Holt? He's difficult to pigeon hole. |

Kilbo, self publishing, which is generally considered a waste of time and a money-sink for fiction, is a path I have considered for EQ. I had a suspicion that EQ would be hard to sell because it's so very hard to market, straddling as it does, several genres. Whereas most authors who do try self-publishing, do so because, to be kind, their book has limited appeal, or just....ahem...isn't all that - they end up perhaps selling a few hundred, and a garage full of boxes of copies. In my instance, I hopefully will have a growing word-of-mouth reputation as a result of A Thousand Suns, and exposure via our website and this wonderful forum to a steady flow of Eagles, YoungBloods and Suns fans. It's an idea I might consider...if EQ is too tricky for publishers to handle.
As for publishing on the site chapter by chapter....if I self published, I'd make available a sample of it probably - enough for people to get sucked into it - but certainly not all of it. I need to earn something ;-)
Mjv: Yeah, I might try the likes of Tom Holt's publisher, Eoin Colfer...but I'm wary of EQ being pushed into a scifi/fantasy pigeonhole, because from the ground up, it was written as a book designed to breakout of that kind of genre, in the same way HitchHikers Guide burst out of Scifi and became mainstream. There are hundreds of thousands of people who have read Douglas Adams, who otherwise would have never read ANY science fiction. |

RE - self-publishing - WH Smiths used to sell, I think for 99p a £1, whatever, a couple of chapters of new authors / new books , not sure if they sponsored it or the publishers did, that's how I ending up reading Tom Holt's Portable Door.

Actually that doesnt sound a bad idea Alex, you could always release ch1-3 in mini book form, and partner with loca Bookshops to market it. just need to think about printing costs but will be cheaper to do short books rather than a full length book. might even give impetus for a publisher to pick it up as you could get it reveiwed etc.....
