'Generals' is 469th place in the Amazon rankings today. That's pretty good considering how long its been out.

I've just finished reading 'The Generals' and as a retired soldier I have to say I enjoyed it. Some military writers can be a bit dry and a tad 'anal', which is OK if you're a purist but not for generating interest in military history. Mr Scarrow emphasises that the book is 'fictional' and he's taken some liberties with history to make the story work - so what - it's brought a period of history and two great Generals to life. If readers want further reading then I endorse Mr Scarrow's recommendation to read Richard Holmes; he was a lecturer at the RMA Sandhurst and latterly the Colonel of my Regiment (an honorary appointment). (Incidentally, he's just published a book on the present conflict in Afghanistan - another good read.) I found the translation of the battle deployments fascinating, the more so because, because unlike most historians the fiction made the identitification with both Generals more personal. I'm off to India in December 2008 and hope to add Assaye to my itinerary! I'm looking forward to the 3rd book in the series as I've visted some battlefields of the Peninsular War and studied 'the near run thing' that was Waterloo (like most soldiers)! JNP |

I picked up the eagle series for the first time about two months ago (thanks to Conn Iggulden`s empire getting me interested)and read them all back to back.I loved them from the off,but when i finished the eagle in the sand i needed more.I was dubious about reading the Reveloution series at first.....but absolutely loved it!!!!!.... Don`t like having to wait for books to be published so i`ve tried to slow down whilst reading the generals....aint gonna happen tho(much to the wifes annoyance)... so Simon great work and write quicker please. :-))))

I finished Generals last night. Wow! What a read!!!!! Some really graphic battle descriptions there, Simon. The story just got better and better as it went on.
At first, I found the Napoleon bits more exciting to read than the Wellington bits. But I really enjoyed Wellington's India episodes, and am actually sad to see him leave there.
I'm really looking forward to book three and the showdown between those two remarkable characters!

Hi I`ve just finished Generals (and Centurian) this week. Excellent stuff Simon, the battle scenes must surely rate as some of the best I`ve read from an overall perspective. And Centurian from an individual perspective. Magnificent.
If applause was food.................... thanks for the scone!!! |

I went to Waterloo! We drove through France in the summer, however i must admit i did not see much of the countryside on account of me taking half a dozen Sharp books, the Young bloods, Generals, and most of the Eagles.
Anyway, we stayed right in the South of France, we stopped off in Neams i think it was, where we saw the largerst still in use colleseum (they were actually setting up what looked like a bull fight arena inside).
On the way back i forced my parents to go into Brussells and to Waterloo, and after getting lost many a time we arrived. The atmosphere there was plain amazing. We climbed the prince of Orange's Lion statue and looked down upon the battlefield. The view was magnificant, we could see the farm that those men so bravly held.
After browsing the giftshop buying various tack for relatives and myself, i made my parents drive to the famous farm. Strangly, the farm was now private property and we were not suppost to be there...this suprised me greatly.
However this did not stop me, and a sprinted to the gates took a few pictures and a quick nose of what the farm was like and got out of there.
I would reccomend anyone to go there, it was brilliant. I would also like to thank Simon for getting me interested in this era of history. Your books on Napolean and Wellington motivated me into going to Waterloo and reading up on what happened. Your books both fill up the readers hunger for action whilst at the same time giving detailed knowledge into what rearlly happened.
Thank you Simon!

| I doubt it will be out this year as I am only about a third of the way into the third draft. My life is a bit messed up right now and it is not easy getting the required word count done each day. But I am getting on with it and Fire and Sword should be finished by early summer. |

Just Finished the Books - 2nd one that is - MAGIC! What an experience. I felt I was there during the campaigns, sitting on the sofa, listening to the narrative - then straight back into the campaigns....... THAT IS WHAT I CALL A HISTORY LESSON.
Well Done Simon - these book deserve a Film!
