Started The Silmarrion (sp) and didn't realise it was actually 5 tales. It's good even if it's wordy. First night i just put it down 10 minutes later but next night read the whole of the first tale (only 12 pages or so though).
It's great as long as you get use to the long sentences early.

Have started reading Jack the Ripper: a 21st century investigation. You know what? I don't think they'll catch him now!
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

have nearly finished Attila the judgement..............all i can say about william napier is that he wrote a good 1st book...then must have found goe=d in book 2 and swallowed the bible for book 3...
His battles when they come are well written, its the stuff between them, i can see what he is trying to do, but there is so much OTT redundant writing it gets annoyoing.

Just finished Robert Harris' "The Ghost". An excellent read about a ghost writer for the autobiography of Britain's ex- prime minister. Allegedly not Tony Bliar, but the resemblance is uncanny...and if you liked the film "The Trial of Tony Blair", you'll find echoes of it here. Entertaining and and easy read.

Just finished "The Sanctuary" by Raymond Khoury. Complicated plot involving the CIA looking for an ancient formula containing the secret of eternal life, set in Beirut. Hmmmm, like The Last Templar, I can see this as a good movie, but you can tell the author is a scriptwriter. Good idea, lots of action, but little depth to the characters. Its an okay book if you don't want to think about what you are reading.

Coward on the Beach (Paperback) by James Delingpole (Author)
Book Description Coward On The Beach is the first in the adventures of Dick Coward, a reluctant World War II hero with an unfortunate knack for being in just the right place at exactly the wrong time. From the burning sands of the Western Desert to the frozen wastes of Stalingrad, from the mountains of Crete to the forests of the Ardennes, from the blue skies above England during the Battle of Britain to the emerald hell of Burma's jungles, Dick has been there, done that, and survived only by the skin of his teeth.
But for Dick there are worse things than death: the thought of losing his beloved Gina to one of his many irksome love-rivals; the hideous possibility that the glorious family estate might end up in the hands of his snivelling, devious, cowardly younger brother James.
It will all depend on the war. Dick's fire-eating father General Ajax Coward VC has decided that the family seat will be passed on to whichever of his sons has the best war. And up to this point, James has somehow managed to wangle far more medals than Dick. There's only one gong, in fact, that could guarantee Dick his rightful inheritance. Unfortunately, VCs tend to be awarded posthumously.
Still, Dick couldn't ask for a better companion. Tom Price - variously Dick's riding instructor, confidante, batman and later platoon sergeant - is the man largely responsible for keeping our hero alive. Having lost one of his testicles at Passchendaele (to the same whizz-bang that lopped off General Coward's leg), Sgt Price is under no illusions about the glamour of war or the glory of dying for your country. For Sgt Price, survival is all. The question is, will he ever get the message through to that young idiot Dick?
ankhsy: not got round to reading sanctuary yet...how worth while is it?? should i save it for a light read after a heavy book?

hmmmm.....its worth a read, but I wouldn't rush out just this minute. Its a good story, but its got no depth to it. Think Jeffrey Archer.

He had a massive amount of hype surrounding his first book which must have helped hugely , perhaps you should ask him how he created the hype?? I think its having the right magazines/ papers and online reviewers get behind you early on.

Yes, there was a huge hype, and the novel didn't live up to it. It was a very disappointing read. I think his publishers just threw at lot of money into advertising. Unfortunately, that is the way of the world.

it is worth the effort, and when you read this and what those guys might have gone through, it also makes it easy to see how harsh it is for the troops there now.

just started pressfield's alexander. As with all his stuff it has a complicated and in depth writing style, but its written in a hell of a lotta detail and its a good read so far, and as always the battles are amazing!

Halfway through Tim Dorsey's new book "Atomic Lobster". If you like fast paced action with an equal amount of comedy and murder, definetly check him out. You absolutely fall in love with the characters. Pretty much the characters are why everyone loves his books! Just like Simon has Cato and Macro, Tim Dorsey has Serge and Coleman going on crazy adventures.

I have just finished "The Navigator".
Cussler certainly likes to through convention out of the window! He does it so well!
That is just seems so plausable that people could get around so early in our history.
Very good read!

I'm currently reading A close run thing by Allan Mallinson. Similar to Sharpe, but set at the end of the Napoleonic wars onwards and involves the cavalry. It's written by an ex-cavalry officer, so he knows what he's talking about.

It's not mine, actually. A friend at work lent me the whole set but I've only really just started them. I lend him the Eagles books, he lends me these. A good deal, I say!
