Just started The Annals Of Imperial Rome, by Cornelius Tacitus, not exactly thrilling to read but very interesting nonetheless!

sorry forgot to post, it took me less than a day to read it, i thought it was great fun, had quite a few errors..particularly the train from the prison, it fell off the end of the bridge but reappeared to try and pull the train over the cliff.....that said great fun and a bloody fast ride.
BUT...i hate the fact that its only half a book!!!

Ok here is another one for you, debut novel by Andy Mcdermott: The hunt for atlantis, its of the riley type but not so far fetched...well the action isnt...its quite indiana jones, im 50% through it in 1/2 a day so its quite pacey.

Currently reading The Edge Chronicles and The King of Ithaca, now Im not sure on this one as the writing style feels very clipped which does get my goat a bit but will perceviere with it.

am now onto the grass crown by colleen mccullough after reading first man in rome (with the eagle's prey in between :)). It's very good and slightly faster paced than first man in rome which is helpful as its nearly 1000 pages long! I am really looking forward to the rest of the series because of the great depth which the author goes into about the history of rome which i find fascinating!

I just read "Gus Openshaw's Whale-killing Journal" by Keith Thomson
It's a bit surreal, but It made me laugh a lot.

From the Inside Flap
Gus Openshaw's Whale-Killing* Journal
Cat food cannery worker Gus Openshaw has a whale to kill.
Not just any whale, but the big, blubbery bastard that ate his wife, child,
and arm. He's called the whale "Dickhead", but can't understand why
everyone laughs and asks if it's a white whale he's after...
With a rickety boat, a heavily restrictive whale-hunting license and a
misfit crew - comprising a homicidal cook, a religious strongman, a drug
addict, a pirate and an idiot - Gus sets sail to exact his revenge.
Outrageous adventures lurk behind every shark-infested wave: Gus and crew
clash with pirates; battle fierce lawyers; suffer shipwreck after
shipwreck; are sentenced to death; and start a war. There's even time for
romance as Gus falls for an island princess.
Gus Openshaw's Whale-Killing Journal is superior to Melville's Moby-Dick on
almost every count: it's shorter, the cover's nicer, the jokes are better,
it's got a robotic giant squid, and it's highly unlikely to become a school
set-text.
*No whales are harmed during the course of this narrative (1)
(1) No, the same can't be said for Gus and crew.

From the Back Cover
"Undoubtedly the best guy-tries-to-get-revenge-against-a-whale
book published in the last 155 year." The New Bedford Mariner
"If you only read one happy-go-lucky account of would-be whale slaughter
this year, make it this one." The Tokyo Harpoon

Just started reading a book called the forgotten soldier. I can't remember the author's name, but it's the true story of a German soldier (the author) on the Russian front during WWII. I imagine it'll be pretty bleak.

So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Matthew 27:54

I'm guessing not. I don't think there was much to laugh about out there, but you never know!

Soldier of Rome : the legionary: it started out quite well, but then seems to be an effort of the author to show what he has read in books about the make up of a legion...we will see.......

At the moment, The Amber Spyglass, the third part of Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy.

Whilst in Italy, I read "The House at Riverton" by Kate Morton, a good read if you liked "Atonement". As a matter of fact, a better read than Atonement.
Then I read Isabel Allende's "The Kingdom of the Golden Dragon". I think it is a children's book. If not, it certainly read as one (lousy translation). Don't bother with this.
