Parm - I thought it was a good beginning. I'm wondering as I go through

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

The violence seems to have a lot of vehmence behind it. I'm wondering if the Artorius character will develop or if the author is saying that the mindset of the Roman legionary is different to ours, and therefore burning a helplessly wounded barbarians face off with a torch is an acceptable act. It seems that the revenge theme is driven by the "band of brothers" ethos (they didn't spare their hand in the Tutoberg, neither will we)...I don't know, I've not finished it yet - I'll let you know how I go.

Cheers

Russ

as far as i can see the author is trying to impose his modern army life and own religious ideas on the reader...and doing it very very badly...its a really bad book

Thanks for the warning Ankhsy, still plowing on with my Abaddon Avalanche, finished the two Britania Pax tales, highly enjoyable, one was zorroesque fight against the Nazi's, the other was a mystery tied up in a modern Victorian London. Very Steampunk if you get my drift. LOL

About to read Shadowmage which Ive heard good things about. As to Bucaneer, a lot better than Corsair. Will let you know more on the other current reads as I do.

Seems the reading around here is slightly militarily orientated. I'm currently reading Alex's A Thousand Suns.

Before that The Virgin Suicides (good Book) and before that The Road (absolutely awesome book), and after Alex's I'll be moving onto The House Of Sleep.

Bit strange but I tend to read all different genres.

Hi Repro'....if you enjoyed THE ROAD (which I did too), you might find my other book, LAST LIGHT, a more relevant read than SUNS. Not that I'm dissing SUNS, shouldn't really do that, it's not a bad book, but LL is 'relevant' in these troubled times.

Welcome btw.

Don't worry Last Light is on my list of books to buy next. Reviews on amazon are very good too. lol yeah don't dis A Thousand Suns I'm really enjoying it so far just keeps making me want to turn the next page. Only problem with that (as I read on the train) is I rather sadistically want my commute into work to be longer lol.

reading Deaths head : maximum offence

Synopsis
The Aux have been dropped on a far-flung planet called Hekati, only it's in Uplift space and not really a planet at all. As for their mission, it seems it's so damn secret that General Jaxx hasn't even told Lieutenant Sven Tveskoeg what it is. His team's going in blind, he smells a rat and he is so not happy - and that's when bad things start to happen and the body count starts to rise...The devil-may-care mercenary soldier-cum-killing machine Tveskoeg and the Death's Head squad are back: cue more extreme violence, a mega death toll, dirty sex, fiendish plot twists and explosive, non-stop action!

the last one was cray violent silliness...and i loved it...

its fun like the first one, but there is a little more plot behind this one, i sense a sneeky ending coming up.

A brilliant novel. Scott Oden should be mentioned in the same breath as Simon and Conn - OK, he doesn't write in the Roman era, but his work is as readable and exciting as our chaps. Check out "Men of Bronze" too - it's a great story, but I do prefer "Memnon."

Hey, if you go for cover endorsements, Simon and Scott gave my book the thumbs up!
