Yeah I agree it's all down to your contract etc. worth thinking about if the book takes off you can even negotiate with the publisher over it, as long as certain caveats were met, although nothing must be done to jeopardise your future books probably nothing can be done, so roll on the next one in HB also it's not unheard of that a publisher will release a previously PB only in HB if there is enoguh call for it.

Hi Andy - as a first time author I'm just hoping that enough copies are sold so that the publishers don't laugh in my face next time I send them a manuscript. I really don't know how well (or badly) the book is doing at the moment either - I guess I'll find out sooner or later!
Cheers

Hi Russ,
well the current figures are (upto WE 12 April):
Position 1013 in the bookscan chart. 3 weeks in chart, has moved up from position 1100 in the previous week. Total Qty sold so far 448
That what your after Russ?
To put it into perspective for you, many books that get full hardback release don't sell that many copies.... and that's over several months.

Well just finished this (gladiatrix) and have to say i was pleasantly suprised, great characters and a whole new slant of roman historical fiction books for me. The action was fairly constant, and what really impressed me was the style of writing changed depending on the character in question, for example: Lysandra the spartan, when you read about her and her scenes there is a notable arrogance in the writing... id give it 7.5/10 a really good debut book and im sure we will see even better with book 2.

Thanks, Parm - praise indeed, I'm very grateful! I know that you really know your stuff on both history and writing, so...well, I'm over the moon that you enjoyed "Gladiatrix." Thanks, man!
I'm currently reading "Fire of Ares" by Michael (Curtis?) Ford. It's a kids book about a helot who finds himself in the agoge. It's light, entertaining read. Next up "The Headlong God of War" - it's by the same chap who did "In the Shadow of Kitharion" published by the notorious Publish America group. I know that these guys get a bad rap, but I think for "hard" genre fiction like "Kitharion" and (I assume) "God of War" they server a purpose. There was a hell of a lot of jargon in "Kitharion" - all sorts of Greek and really specific Spartan terminology - you've got to know your Lochoi's and xiphos's, that's for sure. I'm sure the mainstream or independent publishers would reject it because I would hazzard it's inaccesible for the non-historical fiction reader (and even so, it's pretty technical). However, if you don't a great deal of explanation about ancient Greece, specifically Sparta, then you may well find a right riviting read.
Cheers

Started reading over the weekend "The Afghan" by Frederick Forsyth. I have to say how much I'm enjoying it. It takes real events surrounding 9/11, invasion of Afghanistan, & the build up of Al Qaeda and weaves it in with the implausible story of a British soldier going undercover as an Afghan with Al Qaeda. But even with this implausibility, it is still an exciting read, and very well researched.

sorry this has to be on of the most cliched bits of rubbish i have ever read, bad analogies to iraq war, and also the author trying to push his own does of religion at you at the same time..add to that badly edited and badly written...not even 1/10 from me

Maybe the style is a little too US-centric for European readers? Certainly, that was my impression as I read it. Clearly, Mr Mace is alluding to the war, and to be fair he has more right than most to make a comment. I've not yet finished reading the entire book, but I'm finding the style a little difficult to gel with at the moment.
I've also just started Sam Barone's "Dawn of Empire" and it's great so far.
Cheers

"Where Three Roads Meet" by Sally Vickers. A brilliant read! It tells of the conversation between Freud (in the months before his death) and a visitor from Ancient Greece (who worked in the Oracle of Delphi) who tells Freud that he has missed something in his analysis of the Oedepus complex; and tells Freud the story of what really happened.
It is a short book, but extremely intelligently written.

I read Gladiatrix and really enjoyed it . looking forward to your next book Russ .
I just finished " I Robot" by Isaac Asimov, which i had never got round to reading before. It has aged in some respects, but is still a good book.

Finished Russ`s "Gladiatrix" a while ago, excellent read and an unusual protagonist, as in although I warmed to her (Lysandra ) I never truly took her to my heart because of her arrogance (cheered her in every fight though!). 8/10. Keep em coming Lanistra! (whats next in the pipeline? )
"Under Enemy Colours." by Sean Thomas Russell. Another fine read. I would describe him as a cross between Alexander Kent (Douglas Reeman ) and Patrick O`Brian, somewhere in the middle. 8/10.
"Hawke." by Ted Bell. Absolute rubbish. Considering he has James Patterson saying "...the new Clive Cussler." Clive Cussler saying "Rich, spellbinding, and absorbing, Hawk is packed with surprises...great fun.", and finally Nelson DeMille saying "A fiery tale of power and privilege etc.etc" I hoped for something good. I struggled through half the book then threw it in the bin. Absolute rubbish as I have said. It probably helps that Ted Bell is the former Vice-chairman and world wide creative director of Young and Rubicam, one of the worlds largest advertising agencies because that is all this book is, lots of spin on the cover. I bought it in the US so hopefully its not released over hear, if it is, then be warned!! 2/10.
