Good review - my copy is on its way from Amazon! :)

Alex - 10 Questions - On the Beach?? Really?, I found that to be one of the most depressing books I have ever read!

My copy has only just arrived today.

One thing I've noticed - there are no quotes on the front or back.

You mean the ol' "a brilliant book by a brilliant new talent" - Stephen King....kind of thing?

Yup. Apparently (unless you're some bigshot) authors have to arrange that themselves. ie: get a well known author buddy to pass judgement. Sadly, in the thriller world, I know no one.

Anyway...to be honest, I think people view those with cynicism now.

Not sure they do Alex.

When browsing in bookshops, I'll rarely buy a novel that doesn't have at least one acclamation on it.

i'd have to disagree mike, i dont think i've ever brought a book on he strength on a quote.
i'm sure most of the books i've read over the years (especially the starwars ones and I think the Eddings ones) dont have them.

Thing is invariably if there is a quote, on the cover i will view is with cynicism. thoughts like "did they actaully read it!" and if this si book 4 have they even read it at all????

I'm with you Andy - I've never bought a book on the strength of a quote.
But it has tipped the balance, especially when I'm browsing in discount bookshops.

When I pick up the 'three for a fiver' novels by unknown authors (I bought Under the Eagle like this from the Works), the quotes do make a difference.

My copy arrived today

I'm looking forward to reading it when i'm finished the book i'm on now.

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally i can't remember the last time i even read one of those comments on the back of a book, let alone use it to make a decision........... I mean, they only print good comments don't they? .............. if they printed comments like "crap book, but came in handy as i had run out of toilet paper " as well as the backslapping ones then i'd start paying attention.

Mine too - :)

As for quotes - they never sway me, but good reviews on Amazon do for sure.

back to the quotes on the covers...i think a lot of readers view them with scepticism these days, when you see the same quote on many covers it loses value...the cover should be the big draw and is with me, it needs to catch the eye and make you pick it up. I am really starting to see the value of a neutral cover, it makes you pick it up and read the blurb...and thats what sinks the hook in.

On reading your thoughts Parm, I leaned back and picked up a couple of Simon's books off the shelves. Crammed with quotes, they were. Bernard Cornwell was quoted twice on Eagle in the Sand and once on Young Bloods!

These quotes are there for a reason- because they work.

they did not make me touch the books though, the covers did that, i remember when i picked up Under the eagle, the cover intrigued me, thoe cover of young bloods is fantastic, the colour the texture the pictures...i didnt even notice the quote. Id rather rely on a mate telling me its good, from experience some authors write well but read utter crap books so their endorsement is not that worth while, id rather some one like andy with similar taste told me about a good book.

Finished the book on the trains/plane home....WOW!

I tell you, Alex, it's a stunner. It was sooooo real that it's spooked me into stocking up my larder big time.
[David is complaining that he's been on to me for years about keeping a stocked larder, but no, I don't listen to him; but I'll listen to you! Humpf!]

if any area can survive this it would be your island ankhsy...the problem you might have is a couple of dozen scarrow wags decending on your house to hide out the appocalypse.

You can have your pick of Napoleonic forts or German bunkers here. And when I find the German reinforced concrete cellar that is supposed to be somewhere on our property...........I'll stock the wine.

Who needs interruption of oil supplies to run our of food here? Five days of fog has the same effect.

Oh yeah, CE edition arrived hunky dorey. Thanks, Andy. Next time, don't forget the bubble wrap. Twice it hasn't mattered, but we don't want to be presumptuous of Fortuna a third time.
