I think we'll be doing Alex a favour by listing any slip-ups or howlers, as long as they're not spoilers and given in good spirit.
I'll get the ball rolling:-
1. Sergeant Bolton is described as a NCO. As a sergeant he would never be called that - he is a SNCO or "Sneck".
2. Chapter 43 is entitled 'between Manchester and Birmingham' - yet they're on the M1. Manchester and Birmingham are joined by the M6!

hmmm,
with number 1 you are correct I think on a technicality, all ratings are NCOs but are split into SNCOs and JNCOs I think Alex used NCO as a simple way describe the rank to the uninitiated reader, using SNCO or sneck might have confused the reader too much, but everyone knows what NCO stands for. Alex, does that sound about right?
number 2, hmm, you are right, the M6 joins the M1 just south of birmingham, and beauford services is around the milton keynes area, i think, Well beauford is a place east of the M1. I'm not sure about the location at the start, Alex????
Not exactly howlers, but things that can be addressed for the PB edition.... _____________________________________ If all the worlds a stage? Where's my script??? http://andycanty.blogspot.com/ |

Mike NCO was me keeping it simple. There was plenty more military trivia I stuck in the first draft, that was pulled out because it was putting off readers who didn't want to read an Andy McNab novel :-)
As for the M6/M1 thing...yup, something of a blooper there. I'm sure I went through and corrected errant motorway references. Apparantly not. Sigh. |

the NCO bit is not really a mistake he is an NCO, just becasue there is another potential acronym does not mean you use it as it will confuse the issue and the majority of readers...who frankly...dont really care what and SNCO is!
as to the M1 bit...i didnt pick it up and unless you regularly drive all over the shop no one else will either!! seems a bit pedantic to me!!
If those are the only mistakes that can be found then it seems to me you did a bang up Job alex!!

I really can't believe your reply. The North West has the highest concentration of people after London. Everytime we drive south we go to Birmingham on the M6, it's just about the only way. I don't think it's pedantic to point out that the 2nd and 3rd most populated cities in Britain are not connected by the M1!
As Alex said, it's a blooper. One that countless people will pick up on.

its pedantic because the road they are on is unimportant, i know plenty of readers of the book who while reading it missed it as a slip up, why?? becasue its irrelevant, when reading the book they have not got an image of the AA route map in their heads, and the story its self carries them along. Next you will berate him for having the wrong colour laces in the soldiers boots!! or point out that that particular sevice station does not haver a revolving door....neither of which impact the story or the flow of the plot!

...defensive...there is nothing defensive about the post its stating my opinion that they are pedantic points.
and your first line of quote: slip-ups or howlers
followed by quote: I really can't believe your reply
sounds like some one berating to me!! especially when neither of the points come close to something termed a howler!!

Anyway, just for you Parm, there's more........
The times are given in Greenwich Mean Time. The story takes place in June - British Summer Time.
On page 319, Central London would be south-east, not south-west.
Page 331, <character> is 3 or 4 miles from home. On page 332 <same character> is 5 or 6 miles from home.
Anyway, really enjoyed the book.
Might even read it again and look for errant commas......

I often use GMT during BST. Especially if speaking to someone from outside the UK. So depending on the context of the times GMT might be ok...
Not read Last Light yet as I'm still reading Suns (which is brilliant so far) so I've no idea about context and frankly I think I'm brave to even be in this thread... |

| I saw Last Light in London this morning. Went and bought it. I shall report back when I'm done with reading it. (which might take a few weeks as I'm snowed under work-wise) |

Forget his name but they put his books near Alex's. |

Have now read Last Light... must say it scared the sh*t out of me and gave me plety of nightmares. Not the conspiracy stuff, but rather the aftermath of the oil collapse. From some of the stuff I heard and read about regarding the aftermath of Hurricaine Katrina I can well believe the kind of things described. Who was it who said that society is only three meals away from anarchy (or something like that)?

I read last light and yeah I was a bit curious about the M1 debate. But I dont care cos the book kicks ass anyway and those tiny little errors simply get buried amongst one of the best novels I have read in a long time.
I read it in 1 1/2 weeks. And for me that is very fast, so it must have been good.

Parm it wasnt Jon Shannow it was from an earlier DG tale that got numerous rejections and a letter that said that being a pepsi drivers mate was an admirable profession. The title was something like The Man from Laramy.

Hi. I picked up LL in a bookshop in Indonesia and finished reading it last week. Overall I enjoyed it, the pace and writing kept me hooked - and as well as the Peak Oil scenario, the portrayal of modern youth and the 'reality tv' culture is equally worryingly close to reality! I will recommend it.
A couple of slip ups to report though:
Chapter 29, press conference, there is a reference to the 'refineries in Baku, Kazakhstan'. Wrong country! Baku is in Azerbaijan!
Chapter 79, arriving at Heathrow, there is a reference to an easyJet 727. Easyjet don't operate 727s and never have. EastJet operate new aircraft; 727s are old and barely flown in Europe any more.
Cheers. |

i think Baku is disputed territory, currently under Kazakhstan right now, but in dispute with azerbaijan
as to 727's thats seems to be right, they tent to use 737's and airbus

Hi Wishing well, glad you enjoyed it. Yup, LL is pretty grim, and I'd like to think I overdid it with the descriptions of feral youth. But listening to the news this morning of a London possee who abducted a 14 yr old girl and gang-raped her, all because she 'dissed' one of the gang...sadly, I suspect I got it about right.
Which is more than can be said for the easyjet cock-up. Oh well.
Anyway, welcome WW. And please do spread the word....word-of-mouth is what I've got instead of a recognisable name. |
