Just wanted to say Hi everyone
Hey Alex, great book, Im not big on fiction usually read biogs or history but airports can do strange things to a fella eh?. Anyway great stuff, really enjoyed Last Light.
I suppose like many people here after reading the book I did a bit of snooping, it seems almost inevitable that "something big" is gonna happen? I guess the level of severity and how much it impacts on everyday folks remains to be seen .... I particularly liked the pace of the book and how the RAPID decline in society seemed reasonably paced within the story as all the pieces of everyday life started to fall away .... so not much of a literary buff but Kudos for the skillful way the story unfolded.
Anyway I was wondering - given the amount of information on this subject of "Peak Oil" and the fact that shortages within most of our lifetimes are inevitable how people would expect to prepare for the inevitable crisies when it arrives? I mean even Andys plan was frought with problems .... (I thought a bit more detail in how he would plan for it woulda been cool)... Knowing what everyone knows how would a person, a community , a country possibly prepare. The horse has bolted no? Should we all party like its 1999 heheh?

Hi Trigger, thanks for the kind words. First things first, I ask this of anyone who's enjoyed the book, if they have the time, to get on to Amazon and post a review. It makes a big difference for the likes of me. The book is getting no promotion at all, the only marketing tool I've got to hand, is trying to stimulate some word of mouth.
I think it's inevitable that within our lifetimes there will be a whole series of 'peak' something; peak oil, peak uranium, even peak minerals....peak water even! Bottom line is oil has allowed an 'artificially' high world population to develop, and now resources are starting to bite, we can expect in the decades ahead, a significant die-off, whether that's through famine, war, or some epidemic.
We've simply over-crowded the place.
In terms of the UK experiencing a Last Light scenario...it's very possible, and I honestly cannot see how one could effectively prepare for something like that. You could spend the next ten years stockpiling tinned food and bottled water, developing an acre of ground to grow your own food, dig a well to give you water, but all it takes is one hoodie with a firearm who wants what you've got, and all that preparation amounts to nothing.
Sorry...bit of a miserable post from me this morning. :-( |

Hey Alex...do you think at some point we will either hit a restriction on birth (goverment mandated birth control) and if they did it via some form of mass control would it then lead to damage to the species..ie: the film children of men?

interesting. No. As it is, I don't think this country is ready for those sorts of draconian measures.
Maybe after some significant watershed event....but then, god knows what kind of fascistic bastard would come to power then. Fact is though, at some point in our lifetime, we'll have to make some very nasty un-pc decisions about what we can and can't do in our country, and who we let in, etc. |

Ok...given the rise in Hoodies and the rise in tean shootings etc.. are we on the verge of repeating the mistakes made in the US during the 70's - today with regard to gun culture and lack of moral reasoning towards violence, is our lack of ability to have enough prison space also to blame (ie: there is no punishment? the removal of borstals has meant there is a massive rise in kids who think they are untouchable by the law, and an ASBO is a badge of honour.
Does this moral decline mean that we will clamp down on the chav culture or will we move more and more towards the country living leaving the inner city to drown in its own violence? (already there are gated villages up this way)

I suspect the latter. We don't have a particularly good track record in this country with actually 'dealing' with stuff, recently anyway. As long as the pampered ruling classes can live in their gated safety during the week, and their glorious country retreats at the weekend, they won't give a stuff. Sure, they'll play lip service to the various growing problems, and fire off one ABC initiative after another, initiatives that sound sexy, sound like something is being done, initiatives that make headlines and achieve absolutely nothing.
On a lighter note...anyone watch X factor on saturday? :-p |

Will most definitely do a review for the book on Amazon , I know a bit about promoting on a shoe string.
Interesting remark about making some un pc decisions, there's a severe lack of strong leadership around. Hard decisions have to made and when it boils down to it I guess, someone is gonna be on the thin end of the wedge ... the political correctness thing these days is way out of control . . Im all for equality , freedom etc but ya gotta look at the reality at times ... Equality very much depends on circumstances eh? |

Hey.. hang on a second - Im "guy in red jersey" ..... Im totally screwed here evreyone knows he always bites the big one hehheeeh.
We have similar issues with Anto Social Behaviour here in Dublin , probably not to the same extent as some of the bigger UK cities ... I think we're at stage one of "blame the immigrants" for everything....oh and we seem perfectly happy to let the criminal gangs shoot it out on the streets as longs as no one with money gets shot..our cops arent armed here yet..but I suspect will be very soon.

well, you know, big Jade Goody fan here.
Btw Trigger, if you want to dip your toes into some decent ****-slinging politics, head over to our heated debates forum. Loads of good stuff in there.
Hmmm...with regard to the trekky forum ranks, I think it's high time I changed those for another unsavoury theme. Lemme see now.... |

Hey All , Thanks for the nice welcome.
Parmenion - Aside from the crap flight time wait till your better half gets ito Dublin Airport - its in complete Chaos , the city just keeps growing but the airport ....well the airport just stays the same hehheh plans have just been approved for a huge expansion so the congestion might ease sometime around August 2012 - If of course aircraft are still in use by then ;-)
Alex will have a look at the politics forum, to be honest I wouldnt be that politically savvy, I spend a lot of my time either in workin a day job or bustin my ass as a struggling musician....something I guess you know a bit about !
Hey Andy - Funny you should mention that , cause aside from the many coincidents Ive encountered through this book, I recently returned from Madrid with my good wife where we celebrated our 3rd Anniversary. Great City by the way. So decent hotels in Dublin , close to shopping ... Id say go with this one, I must Warn you Dublin is rediculously expensive.
http://www.centralhoteldublin.com/?r=307000&gclid=CKvixIHGn44CFQcUEAodaxejRw
This hotel is bang in the middle , southside of the Liffey about 2 minutes from Temple Bar. Avoid if possible Temple Bar after say midnight cause it tends to get full of puking 18 year olds and rowdy stag partys, this usually results in the streets covered in vomit and the inevitable street brawls... Its fine during the day and is the heart of Dublin I guess.
Stuff to do in Dublin...
The Guiness, James'Gate brewery tour , might sound lame but trust me is great.
National History mueseum - one of the oldest and best in Europe apparently , I was there years and years ago , It was great , lots of old , wierd dead stuff. Again more interesting than it sounds.
The viking Splash tour - meet other tourists have a few beers and a laugh again good fun (Free Viking Hats and horns to blow.....no not those types ;-)
Visit Christ Church, City Center - Its pretty spectacular.... the odd time they do gigs in there which are amazing , Roderigo y Gabriela played there a while back ( Spanish Guitarists , incredible atmosphere)
Trinity College - I suppose ya kinda have to go , just to see it ...
The Porter House - They brew their own beers , won lots of international awards , do nice grub. Worth a visit. Im recommending this cause its friday and beer is high on my agenda at the moment hahah
As far as night clubs go - I generally dont do them , but if ya have to go to one again avoid the meat markets in Temple Bar, head towards Leeson Street , they have a wine bar kinda thing going on around there and the crowds tends to be a bit more ....well not ready to pulls the walls down around ya.
Ok better go do some work ....sorry if the puntuation and spelling is bad Im kinda spewing stuff out here heheheh
Be well Trev
