After a fair bit of touting of this and all Alexs books on the iggulden forum, they are starting to get the hint....here is some feedback on LL
quote: Just finished this one Parm. A brilliant book, read it in one sitting (until 4am Thanks ). What is his other book? Got to buy it Asap!
needless to say i have given him the details of Suns and also started talking up OS on there...{grin} i hope this will start others buying as well. I think i have finally established my creds there as primo book advisor. {grin}

A truely great read Alex and very thought provoking. I have a feeling that as this book is so topical at the moment its going to keep rising up the chart. By the way its on sale all over the Med. Everywhere I went there was LL, in all the shops in Cyprus, Mallorca, mainland spain and southern france. Its certainly getting your name around. (I did a Parm everytime I saw it to who ever would listen!!!)

that's good to here. I'm a little stunned, and wary of how much life is beginning to bear a rsemblance to the book; on the one hand, good for sales...on the other, not good news for any of us.
Thanks for spreading the word Paul. |

I can see that phrase now entering into general use.
One day in the future, people will research the origins of "doing a Parm". Make sure it is well documented.

as long as "Doing a Parm" relates to books and nothing else, then we're safe , but who knows what the future holds, they might replace having a number 2, with it....LOL

I did something else to recommend LL, posted a blog on it on my MYSPACE page,
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=116151387&blogID=408527832
The bit about the French Revolution was referenced in the LL narrative during the service station sequences, but it only seemed fair to mention it as a comparison to today's world. I mean we would see REAL poverty if oil stopped flowing - not the kind of poverty the gutter press say is a child not having a PS3 or the latest celebrity-endorsed trainers. I'm new to this forum and have been delving into many angles of Peak Oil after reading LAST LIGHT - just go to YouTube and type it into a search - check out 'A Post Oil Man', a comical satire on post-oil survivalism in the form of an animated movie and there's even people denying it as another conspiracy theory invented by the corporations to keep prices high/scare people/burgeon a cottage industry of survivalist kit . . . see what you think!

Hi Nick, welcome to our little survival bunker on the net. Thanks for the nod on your Myspace page.
I really can't believe how quickly things have gone down hill this year - how far the price of oil has shot up. As I was writing LL, we were approaching $60 a barrel and those on the market that dared predict a $100 barrel sometime in 2008 were being accused of being alarmist. Now look where we are.
Whilst all this is great for book sales....I'd really rather it weren't happening. |

Just finished reading 'Last Light' whilst on holiday in the deserts of Africa. Really enjoyed the book and at points couldn't put it down. By the end i was working out how i would get back to the UK should it all kick off!! Odd thing was that in the locations i was in, most of this turmoil wouldn't affect the isolated communities. While the developed world was going nuts, the isolated 3rd world unknowns would probably carry on in their self sufficient way!
Congratulations on a top book + great characters. I have some thoughts on your possible sequel, will post in relevent forum.
My wife has also just finished this book. Would make a great Brit film! Something like 28 days later etc (but you might be bored of hearing that phrase)

Hi Peter, welcome to the forum. Glad you and yours enjoyed the book. Yes...you're right, oil is very much the achilles heel of the developed world. It is, I suppose, ironic justice that in a scenario like that the impoverished 3rd world would cope much better.
As for film, well...the film rights have been optioned, and we're waiting to see whether a production deal can be put together. It would be nice to see it made as a British movie, rather than Americanised as these things usually are.
anyway...thanks for making the effort to look me up. It's a friendly community here...some good general chat.
best

Im 3/4 through Last Light at the mo, ive had to come up for a breath of air- wot a bloody book! If it wasnt for food ill still be reading! Congrats so far Alex on an amazing novel, really one of the best ive read in a while, if not one of the best ive read. The main plot storyline is gripping, a complete page turner, as well as an eye opener. People NEED to read this. The sub plots also keep you turning pages with a suspense that i havnt found for a while in novels. The way youve captured the conditions in Iraq are brilliant, and i love the portrayal of the sh*ts of society. Really is a great read so far, and also worrying, because i can imagine everything that ive read happening in and around my town, and its frighting. Epic book Alex, and i dont use the term lightly. Thank you!

Thanks Lee. With the recent events in the world of banking, looming recession and so forth...I can't help but think it should have been a book about Peak money instead of Peak Oil. Mind you, I guess the central theme is the same though...fragile interdependency of this world etc etc.
Lee, would you do me a favour and spread the word about the book? Sales have sort of plateaued in the UK (although I believe it's doing jolly well in Denmark).
FYI, I'm beavering away on a sequel. |

I have to say that one of the reason I bought LL was that it was set in the UK. The overwhelming majority of survival/disaster recovery related stuff I've seen has been US based and US biased. I get heartily sick of their obsession with the minutia of guns and trucks.
I suspect that one of the reasons we have so little UK based work is that the vast majority of the UK population don't believe any significant event will occur to disrupt their lives - and of those who do envision such an event, the greater proportion of those are convinced that we we'll do the "Stiff upper lip, all pull together" thing, instead of the "Everyone out for themselves, I'll rip your face off for a can of coke" thing.
Anyway, Alex, thanks for LL. So much of the content is what I've been boring my O/H with for years. I feel a real connection with Andy on that score.

Just wondering if it is always this . . .er. . . relaxed around here? Is everyone on holiday or have the masses merely failed to spoil this quiet corner?

it goes in fits and starts. Usually everyone stirs to life when a juicy debate gets going in the political forums. And we have a hardcore of regular posters who drop in with film/book reviews and reccomendations quite often.

Something that Alex mentioned briefly in LL was the possible threat of H.E.M.P. weapons being used with the result being the destruction of electricity supplies and electrical components. The BBC have just carried the story (13 October 2009) of a report by Scientists with the same worries.
Nuclear threat to power grids Scientists have warned that Iran and North Korea could produce a weapon capable of paralysing Western electricity grids for months or years.
Experts fear that a missile-launched nuclear bomb exploded above the earth's atmosphere could cause a catastrophe.
They told the British government that high-altitude electromagnetic pulses could lead to an "economic shutdown".
US government adviser Avi Schnurr said efforts to protect the US electricity grid had already begun.
Mr Schnurr is president of the International EMP Council, a coalition based in the US, which aims to stimulate efforts to protect against the risk of attacks using electromagnetic devices.
Those feeding into the network include scientists from around the world, governments, corporations and NGOs.
Communications failure
On Monday, the British Parliamentary Defence Select Committee heard how a nuclear warhead launched from a medium range missile and exploded 20 miles above the earth could cripple an entire country's power grid.
