I've noticed that a lot of people on this site (other than Simon and Alex) have written, or are writing, or want to write a book. The thing is, I seem to miss what they are writing about. So I thought I'd open up this new thread to find out what people are writing. Not just for my info, I'm sure others are interested too. After all, if you want to get published, at least you'll know that everyone on here is likely to look out for your book.

I myself haven't written anything yet, as much as I'd love to. But I do have LOADS of ideas. I've just got to get off my a**e and do something about them.

Your turn...

Are you able to tell us any more about it?

only that the assassin tales will properly be like Sharpe and the different parts of life at different time (written)

The fantasy world one is called Sanaralia or something like that to do with the place name of one of the major 'tribes'

All you get for now, I can tell you that i've thought of a massive surprise for the Assassin ones, maybe more then one.

As usual, I'm working on non-fiction, does that count? The current project is an article on building a model of the Panzer II tank, nearly 8,000 words so far and more to come with loads of illustrations so it may end up as a two- or three-part article to fit the magazine's format.

Three, actually, that were all my work, and six that I co-wrote. I lost count of published articles many years ago. If I was an academic I'd be guaranteed tenure.

Ideas comin outta my ears....various manuscripts of various degrees of completion

Got this 'Conquest' Sci-Fi series on the go, the most complete thing i've got, just needs work. On dialogue and basic story telling, the story is like massive (by my standards) and spans three books, mite change that though, compress it a little to make it flow quicker.

KT 32'000 - A novel that follows the fortunes of the remnants of the human race in the year 32'000 AD, a new nuclear holocaust, sent us back to the stoneage and living underground. On the top surface a new species of 'Canis-Sapien' has evolved (dog like Human). Also it follows the last days of 2010 before the holocaust.

TIMELESS PLANET - Bit of a Jurrassic Park meats Primeval story, although the creatures in it are on an extra terrestial world. A massive 'Theme Park' is constructed on the planet and time travel is being used in order to obtain extinct forms of life in the planets past. Thats merely the setting, the plot line involves plenty of bloodshed, a few paradoxes and varying degrees of chaos LOL...

There ya go, got other smaller ideas but they're not developed enuff to be worth mentioning yet.

I like the sound of the KT 32'000 idea Graeme, have you written any of it yet?

I've written the opening chapter and a few paragraphs of KT 32'000 of the second. Need to research alot for this one as unlike the other novels, this one has events in the near present '2010'. It swaps between the two stories that both link up at the end...bit like the way Alex's 'A Thousand Suns' is written, with it swapping back and forth between two time periods.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and now say that I have written and self-published two novels, the first being RESURGENCE and the sequel being OPERATION ASTUTE, both featuring a Scotland Yard Detective Inspector(later promoted and transeferred to Anti-Terror) who is drawn into nefarious plots to cause major terrorist attacks by the unlikeliest(in a couple of cases!) perpetrators - and boy does it get personal for him.

A third instalment was planned, it was going to feature a massive nuclear attack on a UK city but SPOOKS CODE 9 and DIRTY WAR beat me to it, thankyou BBC.

I have resumed a plot I was working on before but this will be a total reboot with new characters and some chapters set in Brazil, where I went in 2006 on both a holiday and a research trip. I like to use locales I have actually visited. Everywhere from the Dominican Republic and the Tunisian Sahara to Switzerland and then back to the UK.

For further details go to www.lulu.com/resurgence

Actually, the 230226 web adress is no longer valid. Go to the RESURGENCE one instead, which will be my storefront.

I've been thinking about writing a book, chronicling the "life" of a terraced house and it's occupants from being built in Victorian times to the modern day. The only things holding me back are:
1) Finding the time to write it
2) Wondering if anyone would want to read something where the main character is an inanimate object
3) Knowing full well that I have no discernible talent, writing or otherwise!

Cortianian, I like that. What I would suggest though is you'd need a high-concept commercial hook to hang on the idea. perhaps the house in question was once lived in by some notorious/scandalous character.

Do you think that might be the key? Would that mean it would have to centre around it? Because that isn't what I had in mind.

Hang on, hang on...

Simon and Alex have written books?! ;-)

Seriously, what a lot of talented types we have here!

I mostly do fanfics - mostly Biker Mice from Mars (stop laughing!) and a couple of cross-overs involving, would you believe, Star Wars and The Archers. Yes, the everyday story of country folk.

Actual serious hope-to-be-published writing is confined to an article on Wehrmacht re-enactment which has been in development hell for well over a year, now. No deadlines, involved, fortunately.

I find myself wondering just how many of these projects have come to fruition since the thread began and so many people revealed their plans? Have any of you had a finished work published since then? Was it the same one you wrote about here?

But how long does it take to write a book? How long's a piece of string? I've always loved the idea of writing one, but I'm not worried about the time it takes. If I had started one when I first said I wanted to write one, I could have written 50 books by now! My problem: is lack of talent! And sometimes it feels like everything that could be written about, has already been written about. What more could I possibly bring to the table?

Which is probably why it is said that most people only have one book in them . . . any more than that and we'd all die waiting.

Right now am coming close to half way through the last Wellington and Napoleon book. Would be further, but needed a quick break from Napoleon and decided to crack on with a Young Adult novel, which is not about 80% done, so will be easier to finish in due course.
