Well, what can one say? The BBC - who I normally support as a pretty unbiased news source - has thrown itself into the lap of Israel and pro-israeli apologists in the UK, by refusing to televise an appeal for the people of Gaza. Israel's Blitzkrieg on the Gaza ghetto is another savage step towards their final solution of the Palestinian problem. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed and injured indiscriminately, and the crumbling infrastructure bombarded into the ground. The people there desperately need help.
And the BBC, in a moment of shameful partiality has turned its back on this suffering. It is a black day for the BBC. And I wonder why they have made this decision. We should be told in full.

I don't know enough to say whether the BBC's decision was a surrender to pro-israeli lobbying, but I do believe that the BBC have politicised the issue by its behaviour.
I seriously believe the BBC has lost its way ever since it succumbed to political lobbying to apologise over the claim that Alistair Campbell "sexed up" the Iraq dossier (which he did - not doubt of that) and Greg Dyke quit. Since then, the BBC has lurched from one bad judgement to the next. It has become a spineless political coward, just concerned with its ratings, scared of doing the right thing unless pushed to do so by public opinion.
They pay Jonathan Ross £6m/year, whose gutter humour goes against the BBC charter of raising public standards, and then refuse to advertise a humanitarian appeal for Gaza (forget the politics, hundreds of thousands of people are living and dying in the most horrific circumstances) because it has its reputation to protect?! Hypocrisy.

It's now something of a moot point. The apeal has probably garned more publicity (and perhaps more support) from the beeb's decision that they would have by just showing the advert.
The BBC were wrong not to show the apeal at first, as most of us can tell the difference between humanitarian aid and political. But, once that decisision was made, it was as better to stick to it, rather than showing itself to be even more feeble and week willed.

Mace: - "The appeal has probably garned more publicity (and perhaps more support) from the beeb's decision that they would have by just showing the advert."
Nice, I love it!
BBC has always been partial, they only ever broadcasted what they felt world keep their rating up, and the money coming!
NOW all of a sudden a group of people get the hell "shot" "bombed" out of them, the reports by BBC were all for the poor people, now all of a sudden they refuse to broadcast the "Charity Appeal".
OK - So lets look at were the money does go! Most monies collected for areas where it is needed most, goes to the "warlords", the government of that area..... very little actually gets to the were it is needed.
Zimbabwe - Aid goes in, and stops! ZANU/PF get it all! NO-ONE ELSE!
That is only one of many such examples.
By refusing to broadcast the appeal, they have GIVEN it an unprecedented amount of FREE publicity.Yes FREE! The Charity has not paid for it, BBC has not paid for it, but the rest of the people have - including the people for whom the aid is destined!
It is very easy to jump up and scream at organisation Like the BBC, now start shouting at SKY as they have refused to broadcast the Charity Appeal as well!
I agree, what about the poor people of England, what about our UNEMPLOYMENT, Council Debt, Poor housing, people not eating, health facilities do not work as they should!
What about the people who were affected by Katrina, NOTHING! Not a word is said! But we must give our money, that we have not got to others who may get it, yet more than likely will be used to finance NEW WEAPONS!
OK - so these people must get aid, I agree. Then HAMAS.FATAH and all other militant groups are TO VOCATE the area permanently. The UN and AID agencies are then to move in, control, rebuild - using the "local" and re-establish the city as a city.
Will that ever happen? NO IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN! PEOPLE ARE JUST TO DAM GREEDY!
BBC, SKY and any others well done, all though you all need to check on your own methods of reporting! You are all BIASED!
That is my "penny's" worth. I'll not APOLOGISE for it, so there! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Its a situation that should never have arisen in the first place for there is no impartiality to acount for. Basically thirteen charities led by the Red Cross assess situations around the world and if they feel the need to act then they approach broadcasters such as the Beeb, present their humanitarian case and ask for free air time to appeal for donations. As far as I`m aware this is the first time they have been turned down by the Beeb. They, the charities, are the assessors of what needs and supplies are needed where not the Beeb. The Beeb having an opinion on the crisis (they should trust that the Red Cross knows what its doing and that aid is required!) is where they show they are NOT impartial.
On another point what are the oil rich Arabs doing about there fellow Arabs suffering????
Oh yes.... thats right...offering £100`s of millions for footballers and football teams.

I know what you mean Warren, but the Red Cross carry the can and not the Beeb. Thats the point I made, what they do with it is up to them, again not the Beeb so the Beeb should have no involvement in whats presented to the public and should trust the charities.

Some interesting points made! I did a web search for Arab media sources in English, only found the Jordan Times so far but here's a quote from the issue of 26 January: "Arab nations failed to come up with a clear commitment to help reconstruction when they met this week in Kuwait, where leaders pledged “all forms of support” but failed to agree a specific fund." Hmmm.
Cheers

| It is hard to understand the logic of this. DEC are after humanitarian aid to alleviate suffering. There is no political impartiality angle here for the BBC to be wary of. If the DEC were handing the money over to Hamas then yes it would not be right to show the appeal. People are suffering and need help. That is the only context that counts. |

Funny thing is i felt the BBc coverage of the war was very biased against Israel.
We need to get aid in there quick to support the people ASAP. But the richest nations in the world and their Arab / moslem brothers in the gulf dont seem to be lifting a finger. The money some have spent on football teams and players would make a huge dent in the costs or re settingup Gaza.
Oh and Gaza is not a ghetto in the same sence as the Jewish ones in the second world war. They Jewish ones had about 100000 to the square mile, gaza has 2000, there is a big difference.

I'm not suprised the Arab world failed to support Gaza. The problem is Hamas, who is probably just as difficult with them as with the Western world. There is much more muslim world support for Fatah than Hamas.

I often wonder why so many people are prepared to spend so much money to gain such short term results which, in the long term, make no difference at all. It was not so long ago that I saw some archive footage of appeals from the 1970's and they didn't seem any different to what we see now; the same causes in the same countries. In 40 years nothing has changed, many millions have died and billions has been spent/wasted. Until regime change happens in the vast majority of these countries, until a decent political system is put in place, until the people in power stop stealing from everyone else, then nothing is going to change. Sure, the do-gooders might save a few thousand kids this week, but then they go home with smug grins on their stupid faces and the kids die the following month either because the food ran out or because some local tribesman forced them to become child soldiers and got them hacked to bits.
Gaza, for example, hasn't changed for the better. The entire region is just filled with people who want nothing more than to kill each other. Until they decide to stop, it won't make any difference if outsiders want to interfere either on their side or another.
Sure, it's easy to say that Israel aren't helping and accuse them of wrongdoing, but how many people have truly considered what it would be like to live under constant threat like they do. How many have thought about the constant rocket attacks they live with day in and day out? How many have even the tiniest idea what is it like to wonder each time they step outside their door if this will be the day that someone tries to blow them up? And then some do-gooder in another country tries to tell them that they are in the wrong?

Sometimes, when the long term view looks hopeless, short term comfort is all that is achievable.

| Nice going CTL666, you have wiped out the entire history of the middle east for the last sixty years. 'The entire region is just filled with people who want nothing more that to kill each other.' What kind of crap statement is that? And as for Israel, they are the principal architects of their problems. A little more co-operation from their side would go a long way. As for do-gooders, well what would you prefer, 'do-badders'? Think before you post from now on. There's some sage advice for free. (I usually charge, but I'm feeling a bit like a do-gooder today). |

So you are trying to tell me that the Middle East is full of calm, friendly pacifists? They've had so many chances for peace over the decades yet have proven on every occasion that they don't want to stop the killing. All of those involved have done almost nothing to solve their problems and much of what has been done has only served to inflame things even more. Or in your fairy land does something else happen?

Yes, damn them for wanting their own homeland. How dare they want to live where their ancestors came from and where their religion is based.
Open your eyes, Pete, it doesn't matter what Israel do, it's always going to be wrong from someone's POV. Now I'm not saying they're angels - far from it - but any efforts they have made in the past have always been ignored, defeated or seen as a sign of weakness. Think of it from their side; they are like a dog who is surrounded by people who keep kicking it and then complaining when it bites back. I'm pretty darned sure that if I were in their shoes I would be just as beligerant and forceful.

No, I'd prefer that people keep their noses in their own business and stop stirring up trouble in other countries.

Are you always this much of a prig? Yours is not the only POV and simply because you deign to share it with the world, it does not mean you are correct. In future perhaps it is you who should have a think before writing such drivel.
