ok so this isnt the best book this year but its well worth reading: angus Donald : outlaw
The life of Alan, a young thief in Nottingham, is changed forever the day he is caught stealing a pie in the Nottingham marketplace. He manages to escape his fate at the hands of Sir Ralph, the cruel sheriff, but is now an outlaw. So his desperate mother takes him to the sanctuary of Sherwood Forest - and to the band of Robin Hood. But this is a darker, less idealised Robin Hood than we usually encounter; a Robin who will cut out the tongue of anyone who informs on him, whose fearsome gang fights and steals and lives the life of the forest. Alan is completely taken with his new way of life, discovering an aptitude for singing, and through his eyes we meet all the members of Lord Robert of the forest's not-so-merry band.
if the BBC had filmed this as the Robin Hood series and shown it after the 9pm watershed then they would have done much better that they have with the middle of the road program they have right now

I don't know about any of you, but I certainly wouldn't rank this in the same ranks as Bernard Cornwell, like the cover enforces. Rather it seems like a collection of linked incidents. There were times when I was considering simply giving up on this book due to the continued influence of the life of a troubadour. It wasn't a bad book, but I feel that Donald should get more into looking at the historical blood and guts, adventure and detail and leave out what often looks like aimless waffle.
