The Dreamers sequence was terribly bad, with a most disappointing ending, but he'll be sadly missed for the high quality of the Belgariad/Mallorian/Elenium/Tamuli stories - and the books that grew out of them. I still reread them all.
Cheers

I'm the same as Parm, Eddings and Gemmell got me into reading proper. Really sad to see him go. I agree with you all, that the earlier stuff is by far his best. Even now if someone says I want to try a fantasy novel I steer them to Eddings and Gemmell.

I agree I loved his earlier work, well written fantasy, with characters that started out as sterio types but then became more rounded over time.
Moriarty: I see that ten years in Britain have not changed your Imperial Roman outlook, Caesar. Caesar (G): True, Moriartus, always a Roman eye. Moriarty: Will you take wine? Caesar: No thanks, I think I'll have a half of mild and a packet of crisps.

Sad to see that he's died. I read a lot of his earlier stuff just after I'd finished with Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series. I found the Belgariad and Mallorean series enjoyable, but his later stuff was less so. Consequently I gave the Dreamers series a miss.
I don't recall seeing much High Fantasy in recent years. Has it gone out of fashion and been replaced by the likes of Harry Potter?
