just seen the new book in the eagle series is Gladiator. really diappointed, a thought it was an unrelated book by Simon.
Dunno why, just feel that Gadiator is a bit if a cliche name for a Roman series, but i guess thats what the publishers wanted. not everyone knows what a Centurion is but evryone knows a Gladiator, especially after the film.

| It's an interesting topic, this book title business. As far as I am concerned, and most readers, it is the Eagle series. Indeed Amazon.com markets the books collectively under that brand. However, the decision was taken by the publishers to try and broaden the appeal of the series to a wider market. They did this first with Centurion which went on to sell four times as many hardbacks as the previous book in the series, The Eagle in the Sand. It's all about semantic load. If you pick a word which resonates widely, then it connects to a wider audience in a much more specific and concrete manner. Centurion has far more impact than The Eagle of the Tenth (my less than good choice of title, though smart if you think about it), and The Gladiator is far more likely to appeal to a wider audience than my Eagle over Crete. Have to admit it. The Headline bods are right. Of course, the test will come on 6th August when the new book comes out and we see how well it does in the hardback chart. |

6th August? I thought the launch party at Jarrolds was announced for the 20th, when I can't come. Have the plans changed? Joan and I could get to Norwich for the 6th, which would be a great treat - 2 days before my birthday so a good outing to celebrate it!
Cheers

Noooo, don't change! I've got my flight booked for the 20th! I don't think the airline or my insurance company will buy the reason for the change.

The launch hasn't changed, the book is simply put on the shelves on the 6th of august. one good thing is that simon will know the 7day sales before the launch so it could be a double celebration #1 spot in the charts and it's official talk/launch
Alex: if you see this, how about videoing the launch and putting it on youtube for everyone who cannot make it? worth the effort?

I support the selection of the title. I never would have read Simon Scarrow's books if I hadn't stumbled upon CENTURION. The title intrigued me and I have since bought and read all the earlier books in the series. They are very well written and I needed to find a replacement for my favourite authour Wilbur Smith, as I was a little disappointed with his last book, mind you he isn't getting younger. Thanks Simon for the entertaining, gripping, educational novels. I am sure GLADIATOR will gain you a larger audience.
Cheers, Bill

Katie is an astounding person. I find it hard enough to fit two novels in a year and she does that and so much more without even breaking a sweat. What a gal!
But seriously... Just back from a week of stock signing during the lead up to publication day and I've run through several ink cartridges en route. There seems to be a nice amount of stock out there and Headline have all the promotional props in place - I've been enjoying the history channel with its 'sponsored by the gladiator!' ads. Huge fun. On Thursday my editor, agent and I joined the new boss of Headline for a celebratory lunch, which confirmed my view that there really should be more women in positions of political power in this country. My editor, Marion, presented me with the armour used to create the cover of THE GLADIATOR which now has pride of place in my study. Might even let Alex dress up in it if he's nice to me. This week's chart aspirations (to be reported in next week's sunday times) will no doubt be scotched by Katie Price and her brilliant new literary work. But we live in hope for the first full week of sales in due course.
Meanwhile, back to the laptop and on with the Battle at Busaco ridge... |

By the way, I'm coming to the launch with a couple of orders for signed books. I expect I'll be able to buy several 1st editions there for signing, Andy?

I leave on the 18th... This is so unfair, maybe it's because im a teenager and your all out to get me! I plan on going in to Waterstones in Norwich as soon as I can although i doubt they have any signed ones left, i suppose they are nearly all on ebay by now, being sold for profit to people like me who just want the awesome books :'(
