My book is available on amazon, it's called 'High-Class Hostage' (nothing to do with high-class or hostages, but there you go).
I wrote it about 2 years ago and have just read it for about the 20th time. I can now tell you that this book is an absolute freak of nature. Yes, it sucks and it blows at the same time!
I'm thinking about calling in the Environmental Health officers, because this book is stinking up the neighbourhood! It warrants a public health warning - 'reading this book can be bad for your literary perspective'. It deserves a big red sign saying "Reading this book will waste 6 hours of your life" - don't do it!"
To think I spent 9 months of my life on this. Jeez.

I've gotta admit, you're not really selling it to me, Deva! What's it about, if not high-class or hostages?
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

I think 1st books are useful as an apprenticeship....you write it, you learn what you need to learn, then you shelve the manuscript and write your REAL 1st book.
Don't be disheartened.
Oh, and by the way....I hate reading my own stuff. It's like listening back to one's own voice recorded. It makes you cringe. |

Exactly 10 copies have been shifted - I bought 8 to pass around. I pity the other two guys.

The question still stands, Deva. What's it about?

Imagine if the 9/11 attack had not happened on New York, but on Mecca. The war in Iraq would never have happened, Saddam would still be in power, the IRA would not have completely disarmed, the war in Afghanistan would never have commenced, the Chechen Muslims would kick off even more, the Russians would be dragged into it, the whole of the Muslim world would be after blood....then they find out that the guy behind it was an American. So, revisionist history in a way. It's written in the 3rd person and seen through the eyes of all characters, including the bad guys.
The trial readers said they thought it was entertaining, but a bit too breathless. Too pacy, no respite. I've come to hate it though - I think I could do so much better now (why I think this God only knows). Surprising how some of the predictions in there have already come true though.

| Having read some Matthew Reilly and found it fun enough is it really possible to be too breathless and pacy? |

have to agree, nothing wrong with a book that leaves you shattered at the end of it, i have had a book like that, and i have sat reading it for 26 hours straight, i could not put it down...had to finish it....to me thats a great read not a bad one.

Yup....commercial-enough sounding plot to me.
Perhaps it's not an issue with pace/breathlessness...perhaps the issue is with too many characters/povs? Sometimes that can leave a reader feeling unengaged and 'hustled along' by the writer if it's a lot of different characters busy doing stuff and little time to actually get to know any of 'em. |
