**I forgot to mention, you can download the first 3 chapters from the web site to see what you think**
Ok a bit of shameless advertising by a very very new author, in fact he has not got a publishing deal, he has self published, now normally i read a few pages of a self published book and throw up in my mouth a bit and then bin the book.
But not this book, its actually quite good, im still holding back final judgement as im only 150 pages in...the characters are pretty good, and the plot flows well, its not cheesy, and he does not patronise the reader. I think it will appeal to quite a few people.
He already has 2 books out and the forst one Marius Mules follows JC's invasion of Gaul.
and at £8.54 Amazon UK or $12.59 Amazon US for a book of 430 pages you get a lot of book for your money.
Im a big fan of supporting new authors so i hope as usual Conn does not mind me trying to give a helping hand a wafting this under the noses of you fans of the genre....
BLURB
Based upon Julius Caesar's war diary and seen from the perspective of one of his officers, Marius' Mules is a tale of warfare and campaigning, of politics and betrayal. Sometimes thought-provoking and sometimes humourous, this book is a historical page-turner full of surprises. One reason for producing Marius' Mules was to tell what is to me a great story but in a more easily readable form than Caesar's original Gallic War diary. Probably the most important reason, though, was to try and put forward a different view of one of history's most famous men. It is perhaps time we looked at Caesar more as a scheming warmonger than a heroic warrior. Fronto (the protagonist of the novel) is a fictional officer, though based on a composite of several known Roman generals and is a sympathetic character. I hope you like it.
From the Back Cover:
It is 58 BC and the mighty Tenth Legion, camped in Northern Italy , prepare for the arrival of the most notorious general in Roman history: Julius Caesar. Marcus Falerius Fronto, commander of the Tenth is a career soldier and long-time companion of Caesar's. Despite his desire for the simplicity of the military life, he cannot help but be drawn into intrigue and politics as Caesar engineers a motive to invade the lands of Gaul .
Fronto is about to discover that politics can be as dangerous as battle, that old enemies can be trusted more than new friends, and that standing close to such a shining figure as Caesar, even the most ethical of men risk being burned.
Ok so i have finished it, and i stick with the fact that it could do with a professional edit, biut its not that badly edited.
@ £8.50 for a 400+ page book its a bargain, and its fun, with great characters, sort of a cross between scarrow and iggulden.
the author is stll a little rough around the edges, buti think a real star in the making....now i just need to help him get his book under the nose of a decent agent, but in the meantime, its still for sale as a self published title, which seems to be a more and more populare way to get noticed.
so support the stars of the future, get in there on the ground floor, and buy a copy now.
