Went to see this today, and have to say this is a do not miss film, interesting, depressing, exciting, full of action and lots of deep story.

Synopsis

In 1990, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends

I really liked the innovation with D9. Loved the fx work which looked better than a lot of the sloppy Holloywood offerings. Clever ideas, great multi-layoured central character.

I just felt it was all a bit garbled. Can't explain it really....other than it felt like a tale that should have taken place over a few weeks instead of 74 hours. Also, the mix of documentary reportage with straight action movie felt like it was breaking convention rules in much the same way that mixing 1st person and 3rd person in a novel is just...odd and jarring.

I dont know, i liked the way it broke convention that way, i dont think you have to just stick with the norm...you can only ever have 1st person never ever mix them etc....

i think it was the scifi version of 30 days of night ...if you see what i mean....that film moved away from the standard vamp film, this one moved away from the standard alien flick.

i think they might do a follow up, i just hope its not a massive budget hollywood naff one.

I watched and recognised some of the places. For a Sci-Fi out of South Africa this is fantastic. Really enjoyed it.

Personally I loved D9 and felt it was a really refreshing film, in the sense it avoided so many of the tired Hollywood cliches.

However I can understand the garbled comment. The difficulty with changing convention is that it can make a film more difficult to follow easily. The benefit of convention is that you can go and know how to expect and how to watch a film, when films such as D9 come along it can take a little while to switch on to the style and this can leave people feeling slightly uncertain about what they have seen.

In a similar vein the film version of "Touching The Void" took a mixture of interviews with the main players behind the real story and mixed it with actors and scenes in a documentary style. A fantastic book, and a fantastic film but one that benefited enormously from a 2nd / 3rd viewing when I knew what to expect and how to approach the film.
