Hi everyone, just come back from a trip to Dorset. Just couldn't stop my feet taking me for a yomp around Maiden Castle. What an amazing place!
You could see how it must have been to assault such an awesome defensive earth works. When i read 'when the eagle hunts' i built a picture in my mind of the place, but until you actually stand out side & look up at the huge ditches its impossible to get an angle on the scale of the place.
Has anyone else been

Yup! I was stationed near Dorchester and visited Maiden Castle several times. Exploring the ramparts gave me giddy fits in places. The Brits must have felt invulnerable with those steep sides, but they weren't. Did you see the amphitheatre and Roman walls at Dorchester itself?

Sadly no, only had 4 hrs to kill, just enough time to for my friends & I to run up & down the ramparts a few times. Makes you realize just how effective the roman were at hand to hand combat!
Were you at Poole or Bovington

Neither - Piddlehinton. A name which made us laugh. The Victorians (or earlier) changed the larger village's name to Puddletown, but ever bother with that tiny hamlet.

About 18 months - long enough to get tired of the trip into Dorchester though I did make some local friends off the base. Before that I'd been stationed briefly at Blandford, then Honiton, then Blandford again, then Gosport, all for training courses. The nearest I got to "foreign parts" was three days on the Isle of Anglesey to watch a missile demonstration!
