Has anyone read this on this forum. I have just finished it and found it to a huge site better than Cornwell's previous Saxon Story, Sword Song. It follows on a couple of years after the events of the previous books. Alfred is dying and there is a huge struggle for the throne of Wessex. With recurring Viking raids by chieftains Haesten and Harald, Uhtred is once again called upon to lead the Saxon armies of Wessex. Yet with continued criticism and lack of interest in a large defeat he inflicts on the Danish hoardes he is pushed to abandon the cause and look to the stronghold that should rightfully be his at Bamburgh. The rest is up to you to find out, but I would strongly recommend this for the coming winter months.
I just finished reading this as well. Thought it was excellent as always and the Saxon books are definitely becoming one of my favourite Cornwell series. Have to agree though that Sword Song wasn't his best work but it was still enjoyable.
Finished it recently & thought it was excellent. I then read Agincourt which yet again was a superb read from an excellent writer.... In between Simon & Cornwells latest offerings I'll probably just read the whole of the Saxon stories again as they are top class but I really do think The Warlord Chronicles with Arthur is his best stuff...!!!!
