| Sorry Ankhsy, I don't recognise or accept this image of Britain. There are plenty of other countries in Europe where the cost of living is far higher than the UK and the levels of public service are poorer. Aside from that, I would argue that the quality of life in the UK is perfectly good for the vast majority. Just take a walk in the countryside and you will see it at once. We don't (yet) have rubbish piled along the side of the road like you have in many parts of Greece. I have not seen a thick sewage slick like the one that used to sit half a mile offshore from where my parents live in Spain. We don't have the racial tensions of France (quite yet). Having done a little bit of travelling, I still think that the UK is always a pleasure to come back to. I even think the comparatively high taxes we pay here are a reaonable price to pay in return for what we enjoy. Of course there's a lot that needs to be fixed here, but let's not lose sight of the reality. It is a beautiful country, with considerable political and personal freedoms. If I deplore anything about the UK it is only the growing sense of complacency over the need to struggle to preserve what we have, and the need to make it fit to survive the troubles of the future. |

Don't shoot the messenger! I just post these news items to provoke discussion on the forum.
I completely agree with Spain being in the top country for quality of life in Europe. But then again, I'm biased.

I must admit, your views would be bias according to where abouts in Britain you are. I am from Derbyshire... so i get a bit of both lol. The countryside part to it is beautiful, whereas the people's attitudes and town centres... are not

I think I'd like to know more about how they quantify "quality of life". The criteria listed in the article seem a bit vague and open to interpretation. I do agree, though, that many in the UK are obsessed with having money; they know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Britain comes in last. But even Ireland is worst than last......
How do you really feel about Ireland?

This is interesting.
Simon - the area I live in, is not good at all, houses are in bad condition - council has not money to fix them, road are full of pot holes, tenants are below standard levels of education, alocohol and drug abuse is rife.
I do not have any experience of Europe except flying over it at 20000 feet, what I did see was clean, conpared to where I have come from.
I do not give to charities where the money goes out of the country. We need it here more than ever, yet what we should be giving our own people is been sent else where. That is not on! Not on I tell you!
Now Simon this I agree 100% with: "Of course there's a lot that needs to be fixed here, but let's not lose sight of the reality. This is critical! We have these rights, yet we as a nation do not seem to want to the responsibility of these rights. We do need to jack ourselves up and get standing. We need to get our "leaders" shake them around tell them what we as a nation want, and if they do not deliver, "fire" them! We need to get our act right, and back on the straight and narrow them we can look at other countries and help - IF THEY ASK FOR IT!
