You should always push children to read above their age. At eleven I'd already read Darwin's Origin of Species (and nearly got expelled from my Catholic School for doing it as a book report).

| Some children need easing into reading due to reading problems, so pushing them to do more than they can, can have the opposite effect. They give up and say I can't do it, so puts them further behind, but reading to their ability and getting them to try harder pieces is good. |

Oh Ankhsy! That must have been even less popular than my choice of Lord of the Rings for a school prize back in 1952, when all the other boys picked Latin dictionaries and suchlike. I, of course, say that even in those days I could pick out a great classic writer. I still hae the book - wish it was a first edition!
Cheers

My Dad had (and still has) a brilliant library of great classic works, everything from The Iliad to Thomas Moore's Utopia, and I was expected to read one book from it a month and then discuss it with my Dad. I think I've told you before that's how I began collecting owl figurines....if I argued badly, Dad gave me a cheap owl figurine; if I argued well, he gave me an expensive owl figurine.
I still have them all, a lot of cheapo stuff and some very nice owls including Lalique and Kosta Boda.
Darwin's book was just one of the books which we discussed, which I turned into a book review. I didn't know that it was on the Catholic Church's list of banned books.

I just wanted to post a friend's (from Canada) comment on Alex's book:
I have finished A Thousand Suns (just this evening after coming back from dinner with friends). It is a terrific novel, and I thank you for recommending it to me and for sending it to me. I just hope he can sustain this talent on the next one. I found the character of Max to be ambiguous. I liked him, but at the same time I wondered if he would have had the strength of character to make that negative decision. And I think the physics of the non-terminal chain reaction to be a bit of a reach. But, back then, who knows? At any rate, it was a great novel and it provided lots and lots of local color. I do hate the Nazis, you know.
He was the principal expert witness (Linguistic) in a trial several years ago in Canada which made legal history, as it was the first time that nazi propaganda online was shown to deliberately incite racism through the use of language. He continues to be vilified by pro-Nazis for his testimony t the trial, hense his dislike of them.

Thanks for doing that. It really does help - far more than any marketing spend on leaflets, posters, POS materials - to have a network of people spreading the news by word of mouth. It's word of mouth that transformed Rowling's fate.
Anyway, thank you again....and keep spreading the word. Seriously, it makes a difference. |

Right Ive managed to avoid everything about Alex's book until now. Its finally bloody arrived. So Im currently throwing my current book to one side to read this one, when Ive done that, if Alex is still willing, I plan an interview, to accompany the review for the website. Mind you could be close as Simons new Eagle novel will be arriving the next day or so. hmm who to go for first. LOL

No I don't wear an outfit!! I wouldn't wear one of those jumpsuits if you paid me. (Quickly locks closet and leans on the door)
Nothings gone wrong just I used to worry about my brothers reaction to my actions, but now I just think...............(fill in the blank) and I indeed came out of his shadow.
Thankyou very much! (swivels his hips, and shakes his knees before going off to get a cheeseburger)

What hole?. What I said was simply a joking reaction to what she said but at the same time taking the P*** out of Elvis and many impersonators who always use that response to a wisecrack, and never for a second considered her as a dog.
Ankshy asked what a hound Dog was so I told her.
How do you 'ake' a friend anyway?
