I am wondering if these books will ever get us to the point of Vespasian's rule. I really just want to see how Simon writes about Vitalius (sorry about spelling) getting dragged through the streets of Rome. I really hate this guy, Simon has done a great job making him a villian.

I reckon it would be at least another nine or so book before we get there - hopefully! |

| However long it takes, It's certainly going to be one helluva journey. Simon could not have chosen his period better. It has to be Simons plan to go the distance, especially considering the events that lead up to Vespasian becoming Emporer. You couldn't dream up a better page turner. With Macro & Cato along for the ride it'll be fantastic. |

| I hate Vitellus so much I was happy to not read about him in Eagles Prey. I guess Simon hit the mark with him. |

I dunno while I know this is going against the majority I feel Vitellus suffers to much from what could be called villanitus. Ergo "Today I shall kill the hero and take over the world maahhawhaw" Then of course going on the get his arse handed to him and fail miserably. When villians fail to much they become a bit of a joke. Its like Stormtroopers on Starwars First they are the worlds worst shots then they get beaten up by Teddy bears. |

Re: Vitelius - Simon would probably be able to answer this one. But have you noticed in the movies that if you want to give someone an air of authority, or evil or callousness, the old trick is to give em an upper class english accent - HBO Rome for example. Obviously the character has no accent - but he seems to have the mannerisms and snobbery, and the 'I can get away with anything' attitude because of his class. I wonder whether this is how we think the patricians behaved, or is it a reflection of Imperial english behaviour? I'm not sure if that came out the right way?
cheers

| It is my aim to cover the year of the four emperors and I'm looking forward to the showdown with Vespasian hugely. However, I think you are all a bit hard on Vitellius. I thought he was rather heroic in the battle in the German village. And given the stakes he is playing for he simply has to be ruthless. I must admit, I like him as a character, he always seems to come up with some new vein of viciousness every time he crops up. As for the class issue - I think that there genuinely is a temptation to bend the rules and perceive 'oneself' as being above the herd. Just look at our own political elite for proof of that. |

Wow, it's really nice to start a post and the author of the book makes a comment. I think you made my day
As to the English accent reply, I'm American and when I'm reading Vitellius, Narcissus or anyone who purposely is written to have an upper class arrogance..... They have an English accent. I think that comes mostly from the TV Rome) and the movies. Not my personal views. (I am not trying to offend anyone) Vespasian for some reason reminds me of Maj. Gen. William F. Garrison played by Sam Sheppard in Black Hawk Down. Someone who knows what it is to be in the thick of battle, to be a fighting man so to speak. |

Apparently the makers of Rome felt that American actors were too contemporary, that they couldn't carry off proper historical drama (Brad Pitt is living proof of this!). I'm not sure that that is always the case - Joaquin Phoenix made a good Commodus, although of course even he was using a British accent (so was Mr Pitt... in a way).

| True - the Brit accent works for me. Have to say that I thought the Irish accents for the Macedonians in Alexander made me roll up - a kind of Father Ted goes psycho effect... |

To bring this back to the initial point of Vespasians rule i'd be interested to see if we end up in Judea.
I am also looking forward to seeing if Cato and Marco interact with the different characters of Titus and Domitian, Vespasians sons.

Correct you are...
Vitellius became Emperor for a short period of time before Vespasian, his sons, his freinds and several legions took it from him. It was during the year of the Four Emperors. I'm sure that Simon will get around to this eventually. After Neros death there were four emperors within one year - Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespasian. |

Vespasians rule was considered a success by later historians but the feeling at the time was he was a grasping greedy emporer.... in fact he was but he used that wealth not to feather his own bed but to rebuild the empire
