It's an interesting issue, Acamas. It's true that $34 is a lot to pay for a book. Unless it was a book I really wanted or needed then I would baulk at the price. Then you have to factor in disposable income. Buying a $34 book if you work at Pizza Hut is far more of financial sacrifice than if you own Microsoft. Then you also have to weigh it against other interests. That same sum could buy a computer game that might offer as much pleasure or five or so trips to the cinema, or three DVD purchases, and so on. What a product is worth depends upon the consumer to a great degree. Just a thought, do you have a public library near you that might be able to stock my books? That might be a solution.
The other side of the coin on this is that it takes a long time to research, plan and write a book, and the rewards are not as great as you might think (Dan Brown aside), given the way that retailers are forcing ever greater discounts onto publishers, who in turn force them onto authors. At present my cut of a 6.99 paperback works out at about 30p before tax, or 20c. You have to multiply that by a lot before you start making a decent income.
So we're flip sides of the same coin, you and me. We both have to make a living, and as a consumer you want the cheapest price you can get, as a producer I want the hightest price I can get. If it's too high then you won't make the purchase, and if it's too low it won't be worth my while to write books. Not an easy one to resolve I think.
The library!!?? Haha! That must be a joke. Around here the only books they had written by you were the first two books and that was it. I remember finding Conn Igguldens first book at the library 2 years ago in the "free books" section. Our libraries here are so messed up.
And since your post was so convincing, I might actually buy it. However, I am sure your next book will be another $34 and then another $34! One way or another I am going to be forced to figure out a way to find a cheaper way to purchase books once I am on my own and out of the house. |

| I'm curious, Acamas, what is the attitude to libraries in the US? Are they neglected? Inefficient? Do people use them as much as I assume they used to? Please let us know. |

I can't exactly tell you attitudes of the nations libraries since there are so many. There is only one librarian in my local branch. It's a small library but modern because it was built 10 years ago. The rest of the workers here are volunteers, or minimum wage workers. This library does not hold any of your books. There is another branch about 5 miles away that is much larger and much older that includes two of your books. They don't sell or throw out nearly as many books as the local branch nearby my place, instead they keep them. The city library is a total mess. By next year they plan on building a 4 story library to house more books. Here is some more info:
http://www.sandiego.gov/public-library/about-the-library/
My school was built about 4 years ago. The library is completely different than any other research library in any school. Rather than stuff it with expensive books, they only have a small section for books that's even smaller than my elementary school's library. Most of it has computers instead, wired to the internet for research. |

Parm is right, Acamas, you should be able to get an inter-library loan, where your library will ask for the loan of a book from another library.

Oh Nisia! That's bad of him! Tell him to hand it over to you now if he wants any cooking, clothes washing, ironing, house cleaning or to not have to sleep on the sofa.

i purchased eagle in the sand last saturday (20th aug) for £11.99 having two kids and a hetic job i expect to finish reading it in a week. on the same saturday i paid sky tv £14 to watch my beloved spurs get humiliated 2-0 by bolton, there is a point there i think ha oh yes as has been mentioned a book can give a lifetimes enjoyment (following spurs gives a lifetime of pain) , i will probably read the whole eagle series from start again once i finish the latest book. 90 mins of pain for £14 verses £11.99 for a cracking yarn as they say nuff said |

hi, you'll possibly struggle getting the first 3 books unless your prepared to pay good many, Under the Eagle goes for anything between £300-£500 mine cost me £275. the others around £100 each I reckon. good luck took me long enough to complete the collection.

Iggulden's Khan book isn't out until January, so I was suprised to see it being offered together with EinS. I suppose Amazon send you EinS first.
