As you can see, I've started reading EinS and immediately the phrase "hearts and minds" touch a nerve. I don't think for a moment that the Romans cared a bit about winning hearts and minds of the Jews, and I'm reading this as Simon's sense of humour at work....somehow, I have visions of Claudius looking like George W in drag.

Methinks we have the making of a new comdey! How about reserving the rights to the tv series and starting a new six word story?
We could call it "Carry on up the Tiber"

Nisia's Cato (Gordon Brown) is inspired. That makes: Macro - Blair Vespasian - Jack Straw

and nail it shut...Acamas, stop trying to get a rise from us, we're wise to it and quite frankly it's annoying and a little bit juvenile.

I have also just started reading ES and I spotted that right away. The Romans did not have Hearts and Minds, it is a very modern british military term learnt from Northern Ireland and is now key to our modern approach to peace enforcement/protection.
The yanks on the other hand do not grasp it (my opinion) and I met a Yank in Kosovo who quoted:
"dont get you brits with your hearts and minds - gust grab the balls tight and the head follows...!"
romanisation was my way or the highway - simple.
I can see that if Simon went to the middle east to do research on his book it would be very difficult for him not to equate the current problems in Iraq as they are similar. But Simon - I read your books to get away from real life and escape - don't start making them "too real!!!"

| Actually, I first came across it as a policy from the Vietnam War. It was subsequently the title of a documentary about the war that won an oscar. Beats the hell out of Michael Moore's efforts. |

Simon
Just seen the film on www.imdb.com. Looks like I stand corrected and maybe us brits wern't the ones who thought of the concept, but I will still stand with my view that the cureent US military has a far more hard handed approach than us.
I think it can be agreed that the Heart and Mind battle in Iraq is definately lost, especially on the US side. As for the book, well, I do see a similarity as generally speaking Americans all think the world wants to be like them and if Iraq become full of shopping malls and McDonalds - they would see that as progression! Similar mabe to Romanisation!! |

What are you talking about a "rise" from you?
I'll bet you all my money Iraq will be liberated and Americanized like Europe became after WW2.

| Salve you were correct in saying that hearts and minds is a british military term but it was first used in the Malayan Emergancy in 1951. |

Americanization > Romanization

As according to the Us media (and goverment) Iraq has been liberated, who will America liberate it from now????

Indeed it was, coined by Sir Gerald Templer (I think thats his name), who was in charge of the emergancy.
