Hi Alex, good controversial topic!
A pet interest of mine is alternative fuel, and from my research there appears to be quite a few alternatives out there, BUT the big bully's do not want to hear about, profits and all that. (Tesla - good start point)
That will be one hell of book, combining current thought with practicalities dealing with current martial dictates regarding fuel and it's reserves. - This is a definite read.
Didn't think my brain could work this early in the morning.

Hell, I used to leave my PCs on all the time, because somebody once told me the wear and tear of turning them on/off shortened their lifespan. Boy, is that a habit of the past now. As is leaving the TV/DVD/Surround sound/Digibox on standby.
Sheeeshh...I tell you, once you've swallowed that blue pill, you'll never see things in quite the same way again.

I haven't read this yet, but in one review I recall it mentioning that the respected Lovelock says you might as well just buy the Chelsea Tractor anyway because none of the measures we taking are going to make a jot of difference, we're doomed. He also advocates the rapid expansion of Nuclear energy as being one of the only ways of stemming the flow.

Being a little rock (of 2,400 people) stuck out in the English Channel, conservation of resources and recycling is very important as we have nowhere to bury our waste, have to import practicaly everything we use, and we have the most expensive electricity costs in the world. We recycle 70% of our waste paper/cardboard, glass, & plastics, and our States is now looking at wave power as an energy source to our oil fueled electricity. We are only 8 miles across the water from the French nuclear power plant of Flamanville, but we can't hook up to them because of the nature of the sea bottom between us and them.

Bloody well serves 'em right. They're the same blinkered eejits who throw a solitary plate into the dishwasher because they can't be arsed to rinse it themselves, or have one of those freakin' butane-fuelled outside heaters. I mean...sheeeesh....heating up the world outside your house? Mad.

That's not entirely fair Alex. My daughter drives one because she has a 20 mile cross-country drive to get to work and the same home again. And "cross-country" for her is across the worst area of the southeast for snow and ice, she couldn't be sure of doing it without four-wheel drive. Criticise the Chelsea Tractor people all you like, but don't forget that people outside major urban areas do need reliable transport - we are not blessed with adequate public transport unless you call 3 hours and 4 changes of busses adequate for 20 miles.
Cheers

i will admit that if you positivly have to have one...ie it is the only way to ge from a - b then....walk... no seriously some farmers etc.. have to have them... but the new breed of 4*4 are just wrong, if you have to have one have a propper on a land rover that does the job and only as a last resort.. the we need a big car to protect the family or for keeping up with the jones, thoses people want a slap!!

Hey John....I'm not taking a pop at your daughter. After all, I'm guilty of a whole load of sins. I have a computer after all, and a car too - and they're both busy using oil, when I'm using them. My venom is directed at those who deliberately make lazy, selfish choices. If you're stuck out in the country, then I guess you need a robust vehicle. But if you're living in town, do you really need a sodding great big tank to drive the kids round the corner to school? Could of course walk, like I do....3 miles to my lad's school and back, twice a day. (Which has the added benefit that I can eat like a pig and not pile on the pounds.)

I love a decent size of car that intimidates! Yes, I use to drive a Izuz 2.6 4x4 LDV, back way back when - other life you see - fitted with fantastic big blue & red flasing lights, lovely load siren and PA. Now that was humming, use to clock around 400 - 500 clicks a day in it, and yes it guzzled gas, got about 600 k's on a 70lt tank. Most of the roads - dirt, up the side of mountians, down the other side, threw dongas, out the other side, and just cruising. Yes it was my works van, but boy did I love it!
My gripe comes when people buy 4x4's and use them for town driving, no bad roads, all tarred, snow once maybe twice a year, they should be taxed! yet the bus service runs on it's own time, missing busses, a 10 min journey in a car takes 1-3 hours to complete. Prescott does not use our bus service so he does not CARE! why should he he, he gets driven to work! Tax him!

John, his mate Brown has taxed us to "death", about the it included 2 Jaggs and all his mates! Next election - if we have one, Blair may find himself homeless when Brown kicks him out, then for the election, I doubt it!
But any way, I am having fun, so don't tell Brown, reading my college, Scarrow fix! (he he he) and few other things as well.
Have fun!

Going on about Alex's next book, I don't think I fully realised how much fuel reserves is a part of practically everything we do, use, and eat.
"How much oil is there in a bottle of tomato ketchup?
In all, the study found, there were 52 transport and/or production processes needed to combine the various products together to make a single bottle of sauce. This was not including the crude oil being brought from whenever it first came from, the process of refining the oil, the resources involved in processing and transporting the sugar, salt, vinegar and other ingredients to Sweden, and the journey made (probably by car) to buy the product from the supermarket and return it home."
Have a read of the article where this came from. http://www.energybulletin.net/9980.html It is an eye opener.
