right people I have £30 in my pocket to spend on some books.
I need a new historic novel or a fantasy one
Plus a history book. Preferably one on Rome, Ango Saxons, middle ages Tudors or local (north east) military history.
So what do people recommend

Not a history book, but Richard Dawkin's soon to be published book "The God Delusion" might be interesting.

Michael Jecks is good http://www.michaeljecks.co.uk/ don't be put off by the Templar Mystery tagline on the covers, I suspect the publisher is cashing in on the popularity of Templar/Mason/Da Vinci. One of the main characters is a Templar that's all. I suspect the word templar is one of those things that sells books at airports like swastikas! Good easy read and kept me guessing, not sure if that's a recommendation!

Bretheran is a good read.

Have you tried James Barclay Acendants: cry of the newborn?
I can do you a very reasonably priced Signed HB £10 + P&P ..and its a damn big book! it starts a bit slow but once it gets going about chapter 3 its really drags you in.
Pop to my site http://www.parmenion-books.co.uk/view_doc.php?view_doc=9&PHPSESSID=9253a8aa11600377ce0ac1ad5705506f
scroll down to the book for the reviews
Synopsis The Emperor of Estorea is young and idealistic. The Empire he has inherited has never been more powerful, never been so large. He believes he can bring in a golden age. But his armies are stretched thin, the border provinces are reluctant to pay homage and, even in his own court, dissent and betrayal is in the air. And into this troubled world four children are born. They are the result of centuries of careful study and selective breeding. They are completely at one with the world, they can sense the elements, they can use them. They have magic at their fingertips. A world that has not known magic is about to discover its wonder and its terror. And an Empire is about to fall. No epic fantasy has dealt with the arrival of magic into a previously non-magical world. James Barclay, with his perticular gift for characterisation and vivid description of both magic and action is the ideal author to tell this story for the first time. This is a breakthrough fantasy from one of the UK's most exciting talents.
