I heard a fascinating interview with Gore Vidal in which he argued that the US had undergone a coup by a cabal of right wing oil mogul types. Reminded me of the first Bush 'victory' where the supreme court stopped the counting in Florida once it was clear that Gore was going to win on the recount. I've despised Gore for the way he threw in the towel and let the US go to the dogs ever since. That's what happens when a liberal tries to do the right thing. The bad guys have no morals and sieze what's going.

The question is, has the US turned into a police state ruled by an oligarchy of the rich and powerful?

If so, what are the implications for the rest of us?

I think they need to choose a better frontman next time, apparently Dubya is regularly viewed as the worst President in American History in Stateside Polls, according to the Beeb yesterday.

Who can argue with the polls?

Peter, was that the Radio 4 interview? Assume so, since that's where all the good stuff is. I heard him too. It's a compelling argument but I still think at the end of the day there is no grand conspiracy, just an endless series of cock ups and people taking advantage of the day to day situation. As to your questions, I think that's true of all societies, don't you? And what can we do about it? Not a lot under the present political system (I still think the only viable form of democracy is based on the socalled 'workers' council' system of representation). Perhaps when the internet has broken Murdoch's grip on the minds of the electorate we might have a more enlightened voter, but don't bet on it.

Polls are _so_ easy to rig. Just choose where they're taken. And anyone who believes the "just over 1,000" usual sample can really be taken as an indication of _everyone's_ opinion on anything probably believes that the moon is made of green cheese.

Cheers

An entry no doubt written by one of those who believes polls. Sigh. I know there's one born every minute, but why do so many of them have to be on the web?

Cheers

You forget though that Bush won the 2004 election quite easily and won the popular vote as well.
And if Iraq was such a big issue why has Blair constantly won his elections.
If there is a problem with the process its where Scot's MP's can vote on English matters when they do not effect Scotland and yet English MP'S cannot vote on Scottish matters.
Then you have a system where Labour and the Libdems can combine and go against Conservatives which is hardly fair.

And Simon if you are asking for a communist state with a Soviet. They tried it in Russia and lots of other countries. All that happens is a few people get in power/kill off all rivals and the coutntries economy goes down the pan.
