I thought you got a price per book sold or something not a % of the sale price.

| If you don't buy a book in a book shop the chances are that it has been sold as a bulk item to some kind of wholesaler. In which case you get a royalty payment based on the publisher's NET receipt. In the case of the last hardback, 2000 copies went to a book club at 2 pounds a copy, of which I get 10%, as opposed to 10% of the cover price. That's 20p a book instead of 1.50 pounds. Not very impressive, and that's what makes it very hard for very many authors to live off their writing. Fortunately for me, there are enough sales through regular shops to make writing worthwhile. I'd do it anyway simply because it's huge fun, but it's nice to have some token of appreciation you can use to keep the mortgage paid up! |

Simon,
I hope you dont think of this as a rude question, but as an Aussie I will ask it anyway!!... What sort of ratio of sales do you get from on-line stores to "real" book shops?

Here in Portugal it seems the sales are good. And it's not only the men who read them the women too. Like me |

I have to order them via my local bookshop. They then get them for the British eds. All except the Conquest, that I got at an Aeroport bookstore. That was my first one, bought it for the flight, got caught in the story and had to have the others, still want...

| Okay then, I don't have any answers on ratios. The publisher just gives me the final figure, not a chain by chain breakdown. They do have that info of course, they just don't share it. |
