Rubbish! A good manager _encourages_ his people with praise for good work.

a good manager also has to have a good moan as well as encourage, after all the encouragment is doe and allt he taining given a screw up means you moan at them and set them new objectives

I never moaned at my people as a team leader, manager, senior executive or director. I just went through step by step with newcomers until they knew how to do the job. Once they knew, they also knew that I expected it done properly and would make them redo anything that wasn't right.
Cheers

That takes a long time and commitment, John. Things that usual managers (or even directors) value too much for their one good.

True but not often practiced! I've seen good companies destroied with harsh manegement practices...

at the end of the day sometimes a moan is needed, some poeple these days dont respond to anything else. A manager can sometimes o nly be as good as his team, he /she can try but some team members just dont care enough

and a P45, modern practice does not work like that, a manager must discipline as many as possible, for what ever they can, keep the "lags" where they belong........ hence I did not survive as a manager, as I increased attendance, work was fun, production went up, cost where reduced, and HR did not like it.
They tried to discipline a 19 year girl, who had severe monthly problems for been absent more than once, their answer to her was - have a hysterectomy, The girl took the company to court..........
A good manager not only praises, chastises, but also shows the correct way of doing things, enables the transgressor to find their mistake and how to fix it, continualy back his/her staff up - no one touchs them except their manager. "He/she Eats last - makes sure their subordinates all eat first"

I suppose I picked up the idea in the army. A good officer makes sure his men eat first, etc, etc.
Parm sounds lke the kind of manager I wish I'd had when I began work. Come to that, the kind I wish I'd had when I was filling in time before retirement! One admitted that I'd probably forgotten more than the company HR department knew between them - but still failed to do what he should have been doing himself.
Cheers

Ok, got the idea folks, thank you! That should be a particularity of the British law... as I never had hear from it before! But the situation resembles other places!
