Wondering if the BBC asked Simon for help as the next Character to be portrayed in the BBC Series on the Rise and Fall of Rome is our Vespasian looking forward to seeing if any similarities.

I hoped they asked someone in the know, as so far, I am not impressed with the series.

Lol dont get me started on it what they did to Caesar was terrible.... *shudders* damned Pertwee. Nero was ok at best...Gracchus was fairly good but but didn't mention GAIUS and portrade the mother Gracchus all wrong but other than that i liked it, next one will be pants.

I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.

Really? I thought its been awful! I wonder what is it about our make-up (and I'm not talking cosmetics here) that makes us come away with so very differing views?

i think they should have looked at historical fiction writers to help them with the series, they like simon have not only the knowledge but alos the flair for telling a story...this has been missing from the series so far

I thought Peter Firth was pretty good as Vespasian, maybe not quite how I imagine him when reading the books, but still did a good job. Though it was kind of funny seeing him in that, as I'm used to seeing him play Harry Pearce in Spooks.

One thing I did find a bit odd was that in most of the battle scenes the Roman Legionaries seemed to be swinging their Gladius around, rather than using them for short stabbing motions. Just wondering how historically accurate that is/isn't?

erm in short this is inaccurate the gladius was a stabbing weapon, there is another thread on here somewhere about this series, was a good series but they made so many basic mistakes, with wrong armour and battlefield errors etc. but to the uneducated eye was very watchable.
My major grip was the crammed in well to much into 1hr. some 2parters or 2hr episodes would have been more informative.
