What the hell is this Government playing at, One moment their are to many prisoners, and not enough jails, yet police cells ae overcrowded, and now they are going to add to this..............
Another item on the news, the Government is going to give £2500 to foreigners who are convicted of a crime in the UK, to leave the UK and sereve their sentences in their home countries...............what?

I've given up trying to figure out what this government is up to. In Jersey last year, the Courts decided to abandon jailing people for anything other than the worst crime, and hand out community sentences instead. In that year, they jailed two people and all other serious offenders got community service. The repeat offending rate dropped by 17%.

That's intriguing. I wonder whether it means that (a) the two who were locked up were responsible for most of the repeat crimes, or (b) Jersey actually has community sentences that work. If it's the latter, maybe mainland UK could take a few lessons from Jersey

The wife of the Chief Probation Officer in Jersey is a friend of mine, so I had a chance to speak with him when he was here a couple of weeks ago. The two locked up were drug smugglers. Brian thinks that community sentences really do work as it he says most of Jersey's crime is committed by the same young people, and that making them face the community doing community service also involves public shaming. It's very hard maintain a cool image and be an icon to others when one is shovelling s**t.

Aha! That's the secret. Make the criminals feel shamed! Of course, it must help that Jersey is a relatively small community so they know they'll be recognised by some of their neighbours.

having spent the day in court with my son..{hangs head in shame}
i find the whole process ineffective and pathetic...they could not even get all the charges right and readly for the court...so i have to go back a third time with him...what a waste of tax payers money.
and guess what...i as parent have to suffer some of the punishment with him..if i fail to attend his probation meetins i can be fined and imprisoned... what a f'ing farce!
hey lets not worry that the meeting will cause me to be off work, that my employers could get peed off and sack me...but i still must attend...
the courts are a joke, so why would prisons be better??

The courts, the Police, and the system is ineffective, Parm. There's not enough money or people to deal with things properly, the whole system is a lumbering dinosaur...(actually, Raptor is probably more advanced that the Justice system).
But all is not lost. You have a case to plead before the Magistrate that you are doing your best but the boy is just out of your control. They won't fine or imprison you unless you show total disregard for probation arrangements.
Finally, if the court is again adjourned because of Police ineffectiveness, ask the Court for financial compensation from the Police to cover loss of work time or transport costs (be sure you can show actual financial loss). You are entitled to it and not a lot of people know that.

for the prisons i think they should look at some modern off shore prisons in the outer hebridies...they will be escape proof and they can make them super large for all the naughty people

Nice letter on BBC teletext today about the prison crisis. The writer notes that the problem has lessened by the availability now of 200 places - and then asks what happens when the convicts are recaptured!
